Fernandez Lead Women’s Basketball with 12 Points at Nationally-Ranked Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. – Cristina Fernandez scored 12 points to lead the Lebanon Valley women's basketball team in a tough 69-47 defeat at Messiah University on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons entered the game ranked 24th in this week's WBCA poll.
 
LVC (7-8, 4-3 MAC Commonwealth) got off to a slow start offensively as Messiah (14-2, 7-0 MAC Commonwealth) took a 12-2 lead after the first five minutes of play. Back-to-back buckets by Fernandez and Riley Hevelow cut the lead down to six. Messiah scored with just under two minutes to play before Kate Fitzpatrick and Allison Bimmer brought the Dutchmen to within four at 14-10 at the end of the quarter. The Falcons used a strong start to the second quarter to build the lead up to 10 at 21-11 in the first two minutes. Messiah was able to build the advantage up to 16 points with before a Samya Santiague three pointer with 1:49 stopped a 8-0 run.
 
The Dutchmen came out of the locker room for the second half and pressured the Falcons into consecutive scoreless trips down the floor. Hevelow scored the first three points of the quarter for the Dutchmen as the teams traded scores. Messiah used a 6-0 run to go up by 21 with around five minutes left in the quarter. The Dutchmen used a pair oof free throws by Fernandez and then a pair of steals by Elise Balmer and Jordan Zimmerman followed by layups by Fernandez and Zimmerman to cut the lead to 16. That was as close as the Dutchmen would be able to get despite a valiant effort as Messiah built their largest lead of the game at 69-43 in the fourth quarter.

  • Fernandez came off the bench for 12 points and five rebounds with two assists.
  • Hevelow finished with eight points while Fitzpatrick had seven.
  • Santiague knocked down two three-pointers for six points.
  • All nine Dutchmen who played scored.
  • Daelyn Stabler pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
  • LVC shot 40.4 percent from the floor and had 26 points in the paint.

The Dutchmen will close out the first rotation of conference play on Wednesday when they welcome Eastern University to Sorrentino Gymnasium for an 8 p.m. tip.
