CHESTER, Pa. –
Sydney Zimmerman scored with 12.1 seconds left to give the fifth-seeded Lebanon Valley women's lacrosse team a thrilling 12-11 victory at fourth-seeded Widener University in the opening game of the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Tournament on Monday afternoon on Dixon Field in Chester.
The Dutchmen (9-9) scored three goals in each quarter to avenge a 14-4 defeat to the Pride last Wednesday on the same field. Widener (10-8) scored first 19 seconds in but the Dutchmen struck right back as
Erin Zieber found the back of the net off a pass from
Brittany Hathaway. Widener responded with a pair of unassisted goals to take a 3- lead with 12:24 remaining in the first.
The Dutchmen fought back with three straight goals, two by
Julia Gabriel, to take their first lead of the game at 4-3. The teams traded goals for the rest of the quarter with LVC taking a 6-5 lead into the half. The Pride came out strong and scored two goals in the first minute of the third quarter to retake the lead. The Dutchmen responded with five of the next six goals to take their largest lead of the game at 11-8.
Emily Beard had four goals in the stretch including three straight goals to end the third and start the fourth. Widener chipped away at the lead and tied the game up with 5:12 left. Both teams had chances to score within the final couple of minutes coming out of timeouts. The Dutchmen forced a Widener turnover with 1:20 left and
Jenna Kleissler picked up the huge ground ball. Following a timeout, LVC cleared the ball and worked the ball around the perimeter until about 15 seconds left. Gabriel then found Zimmerman on the left wing for the game-winner. Gabriel then won the following draw control and ran out the clock not allowing the Pride a chance at tying the game.
