ANNVILLE, Pa. –
Nico Santoro hit a pair of doubles to break the single season hit record and propel the Lebanon Valley College baseball team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over York College of Pennsylvania in the opening game of the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Championships series on Friday afternoon at McGill Field.
The second-seeded and defending champions Spartans (23-18) got on the board first in the fifth inning with a solo home run down the left field line by Andrew Santarpia. The top-seeded Dutchmen (29-13) struck right back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at one. LVC then took the lead with a run in the sixth.
Kyle Kingsbury did the rest shutting down the York offense with a complete game gem.
Inside the Box Score
- Kingsbury threw the sixth complete game of his career striking out eight. He scattered four hits with a dominant effort on the mound.
- The senior made an incredible play in the third inning diving off the mound to catch a bunt on the fly and then throwing the ball to second from the ground to turn the double play.
- Santoro hit his program record 64th hit of the season in the third inning driving a 1-2 pitch into left center for a double. He then doubled down the line in the fifth to score Pete Botbyl from first.
- Botbyl laid down a perfectly placed bunt with two outs in the inning to get on base. He finished with two hits and a run scored.
- Mike Bulgia singled to start the sixth before the Dutchmen loaded the bases on a Jace Fetterman walk and a Shane Stossel single to right with one out.
- Luke Blair knocked in the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run with a sacrifice fly to center.
Who's Next
LVC and York will conclude the series on Saturday with game two scheduled for 12 p.m. at McGill Field. The Dutchmen need to win one game tomorrow to win the Championship while York will need to win both.
