Gabriel Nets Hat Trick, Abendschoen Breaks Individual Single-Season Saves Record

ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley College women's lacrosse team dropped 8-12 to the #14 Messiah Falcons on Saturday afternoon in a hard-fought conference match-up. Julia Gabriel led Dutchmen on attack netting a hat trick, and goalie, Julia Abendschoen, broke the individual single-season record for saves.
 
Lebanon Valley (7-8 Overall, 3-3 MAC Commonwealth) and Messiah (11-4, 5-1 MAC Commonwealth) both fought a hard battle to get on the board in the first quarter, but Gabriel was able to net the first goal at 5:19 in the first. The Falcons then responded with four goals to take 4-1 lead going into half-time. As the third quarter got underway, Messiah added two more goals to the board, but Gabriel responded with another goal at 10:57, followed by another Falcon goal. At 2:33 in the third quarter, Erin Zieber put the ball away in the back of the cage followed by Gabriel's third goal in the contest. Messiah responded with two man-up goals, but Veronica Venezia and Zieber each put one away in response. Although two more Dutchmen were able to nets goals, Messiah put three away to confirm the 12-8 defeat.

  • Gabriel topped scoring on the day for LVC, netting a hat trick. The senior also tallied two draw controls, picked up two ground balls, and caused a turnover.
  • Brittany Hathaway handed out four assists for the Dutchmen and grabbed three draw controls. 
  • Zieber netted two goals in the contest while causing a turnover and snatching a ground ball.
  • Bailey Dills, Sydney Zimmerman, and Venezia each contributed one goal in the contest. Venezia tallied five draw controls, while Zimmerman picked up three ground balls.
  • Hayley Cowles and Jenna Kleissler played strong on the LVC defense. Kleissler grabbed four ground balls while causing a turnover and Cowles tallied three.
  • Abendschoen made 13 saves in cage for the Dutchmen. During the contest, the junior broke the individual single-season record for saves. The record was set at 174 saves in a season by Shelby Morris in 2016. Abensdchoen made the record breaking save at 7:03 in second quarter.  
 
Who's Next
The Dutchmen will travel to Chester, Pa. to face Widener University in conference play. First draw is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
