Smith Hits Inside-The-Park Home Run At Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa.Lexi Smith raced around the bases for an inside-the-park home run for the Lebanon Valley College softball team as the Dutchmen dropped a pair of closely fought battles at Messiah University on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons won game one 5-4 in 10 innings before taking game two by a 7-4 score.
 
Game 1
LVC (13-3, 4-1 MAC Commonwealth) scored twice in the first inning to take an early lead. The Falcons (13-8, 3-0 MAC Commonwealth) tied the game up in the second with a pair of runs. Both teams scored twice in the fifth to keep the score knotted heading into extra innings. The Falcons broke through in the 10th with a walk-off single up the middle.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Smith scored the first run of the game after Julia Craig hit a single to left and the left fielder threw the ball away trying to get Smith out at third. Smith hit her home run in the fifth as she knocked in Jordan Hess. Hess had two hits in the game.
  • Julia Forsythe hit a sacrifice fly in the first to knock in Craig.
  • The Dutchmen had 10 hits and stole four bases in the game. Craig, Forsythe, Morgan Comfort, Kylie Balthaser, Anna Marie Hockman, and Jessica Truitt all had a hit each.
  • Jordan Walter went toe-to-toe with her older sister, Madison Walter, as both pitchers threw complete games. Walter struck out a season-high nine Falcons. 
Game 2
The Dutchmen (13-4, 4-2 MAC Commonwealth) jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a run in the first and two in the second. Messiah (14-8, 4-0 MAC Commonwealth) tied the game with three runs in the third and then took the lead with two runs in the fourth and added two more in the fifth. LVC scored once in the sixth.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Craig knocked in the first run of the game with a single to center to score Sam Burns.
  • Burns knocked in two runs in the second with a single down the first base line.
  • Danni Holmes singled up the middle in the sixth to score Comfort.
  • Forsythe hit her second double of the year in the first inning.
  • Comfort singled in the sixth to extend her team-leading hitting streak to seven games.
Who's Next
LVC will be back on the road on Tuesday with a trip up I-81 to Scranton where they will take on University of Scranton in a doubleheader. Game one on Scranton's all-turf field will begin at 4 p.m.
