Craig, Balthaser Record Three Hits Each On Opening Day

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Julia Criag and Kylie Balthaser each had three hits on the day to lead the Lebanon Valley College softball team on the team's opening day in Myrtle Beach. The Dutchmen fell to Kean University 6-4 in the opener before dropping a 18-0 decision to University of Lynchburg.
 
Game 1 vs. Kean
Both teams scored twice in the first inning before Kean took the lead with two more runs in the second. The Cougars scores once in the sixth and once in the seventh before holding off a rally by the Dutchmen in the bottom of the inning to set the final score. LVC plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh and had runners on first and second with one out prior to KU getting the final two batters of the game to fly out.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Sam Burns began her sophomore season strong with two hits, two RBI, and a run scored. She knocked in the first two runs of the year with a single to right field in the first inning.
  • Balthaser and Julia Forsythe also had two hits for the Dutchmen. Balthaser knocked in a run in the seventh.
  • The Dutchmen racked up 10 hits in the game with seven different batters recording a hit.
  • Burns, Tori Hunyara, and Morgan Comfort all stole a base in the game.
  • Forsythe made seven putouts and one assist behind the plate while Craig made five putouts at first. Lexi Smith led the team with two assists at second base.

Game 2 vs. Lynchburg
The Hornets (9-5) scored six runs in the first and nine more in the second to open a 15-0 lead over the Dutchmen.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Craig had a good game at the plate recording a hit in both of her plate appearances.
  • Balthaser recorded LVC's third hit in her only plate appearance of the game.
  • Grace Borkman and Hunyara led the team defensively with three putouts each.
Who's Next
The Dutchmen will be back at the Myrtle Beach Sports Complex tomorrow afternoon for two more games against schools from the Lehigh Valley. LVC will take on Cedar Crest College at 3:30 p.m. before facing DeSales University at 5:30 p.m. with both games on Field 3.
