What You Need to Know
ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley's Football team took down Franklin & Marshall 19-14 in each team's 2021 opener on Saturday afternoon in front of a packed stadium on Arnold Field. The Flying Dutchmen improved to 1-0 and the Diplomats dropped to 0-1.
1st Quarter
- In the opening quarter, neither offense could hold the ball for long as each team's defense forced several three-and-outs. The Diplomats eventually put together a nice drive, but went for it on fourth and one via rush by Keshon Farmer, but Brandon Brubaker started his career day off with a tackle for loss and F&M turned it over on downs.
- Later in the first, as the teams were trading field position, the Diplomats finally put together a decent drive that started at the LVC 40-yard line. The biggest play of the drive came off Logan Clouse's 28-yard pass to Drew Benfatti that put the visitors at LVC's 12-yard line. Eventually, Farmer found paydirt, but the point-after attempt was blocked by Ryan Eshleman as F&M went up 6-0.
2nd Quarter
- On the first play of the second quarter, with the Dips driving again, Clouse's pass was picked off by Brad Shear at the Dutchmen 10-yard line and returned 20 yards all the way to the 30-yard line as LVC's defense came up with a big turnover, only to foreshadow what came later.
- On LVC's ensuing drive, the Dutchmen put together their best drive of the day at the time, led by Brandon Bohannon's 20-yard rush. After completing short back-to-back passes to Jay Sisko and Cameron Niemeyer, the Dutchmen got all the way to F&M's 22-yard line, but rolled the dice and went for it on 4th and 2, but Bohannon's pass was incomplete.
- Later in the second, with 4:06 to go in the half, F&M's Murray McCarthy lined up for a 35-yard field goal attempt, but it was blocked by none other than Logan Grauer and returned 40 yards to F&M's 47. Unfortunately, the Dutchmen couldn't generate any offense on their next drive and the score remained 6-0 Dips.
- LVC's offense finally broke through late in the second quarter when Bohannon found Sisko for a 30-yard touchdown with just 45 seconds left, giving the Dutchmen a narrow 7-6 lead heading into third-quarter action.
3rd Quarter
- The third quarter was similar to the first period as both defenses stood tall and the punters got some work in.
4th Quarter
- Things started to get interesting in the fourth quarter when the Dips began the final quarter with a drive that resulted in a Farmer 1-yard TD. F&M went for two and converted with Clouse's pass to Tim Walters, giving the away team a 14-7 lead.
- LVC couldn't generate any points on its next possession and punted, but on 3rd and 5 for F&M, Clouse's screen pass was picked off by Brubaker at F&M's 20-yard line and he took it to the house for a pick-6. The Dutchmen's PAT was wide right, but LVC was still within one at 14-13 with 7:45 to go in the game.
- The Dutchmen then began a drive with 4:06 remaining and the first play featured a 19-yard strike from Bohannon to Cameron Niemeyer, pushing the ball to LVC's 39-yard line. Later, Bohannon found Niemeyer again, this time for 31 yards all the way to F&M's 1-yard line. Expecting a QB sneak, no one lined up across from Andrew Olson on the ensuing play and Bohannon hit Olson for the 1-yard TD. LVC went for two but failed, but was still up 19-14 with 1:46 to go.
- On its final drive of the game, F&M got to the Dutchmen's 45 and needed a Hail Mary, but Brent Moody knocked it down, ending the game in style, as the Dutchmen held on for the thrilling 19-14 come-from-behind win.
