How It Happened
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – In Lebanon Valley Field Hockey's 2021 season opener, the Flying Dutchmen dropped a 2-0 contest to Gettysburg College on Saturday afternoon. LVC fell to 0-1 and the Bullets jumped to 1-0.
- Gettysburg controlled much of the action through the afternoon and Corinne Kearney needed to come up big several times to keep the Dutchmen in it. In the first quarter, she made back-to-back saves at 3:57 and 4:06. Later in the first, with 50 seconds to go, Kearney made another stop, followed by an LVC defensive save 13 seconds later to keep the game scoreless.
- Early in the second, the Dutchmen generated a penalty corner, but Emily Kline's shot was saved by Eilene Besselman. Then, less than five minutes later, the Bullets were awarded a penalty stroke, but again, Kearney made a huge stop to keep it locked at 0-0. Just over a minute later, Gettysburg broke through with a goal by Jenna Vadinsky off a rebound and Gettysburg went into halftime with a narrow 1-0 lead.
- In the third, the Bullets continued to pepper Kearney with shots and eventually made it 2-0 just 1:44 into the third off of Hailey Rhine's long shot from the right side.
- From there, the Bullets defense held LVC's offense in check and didn't allow a shot the rest of the game en route to a 2-0 win.
Inside the Numbers
- Kearney finished with a career-high 12 saves.
- Gettysburg's Emma Bertrando had a game-high five shots on goal.
- The Bullets lead in penalty corners at 10-2.
