WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley softball team picked up a pair of tight contests to complete the non-conference sweep over Wilkes on Wednesday evening. LVC took the opener 6-3 in eight innings and would hold on in the nightcap for the 5-4 win. The Dutchmen improve to 11-9 on the season while Wilkes drops to 2-14.
Jessica Truitt got game one going with an RBI-single to bring home
Tori Hunyara as LVC jumped out to the early 1-0 lead. After a scoreless second inning, Wilkes would tie the game up in the third inning on an infield single.
The Colonels would grab their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth when Marissa Pick left the yard with a solo homer as the Dutchmen now trailed 2-1. They would respond in the top of the sixth by manufacturing the tying run.
Sam Burns led off the frame with a single and would later steal second. Burns would advance to third on a fly ball and then a
Julia Craig groundout to second would bring home Burns to tie the game 2-2. Neither team would score in the seventh and the game would head to extra innings.
The Dutchmen offense would erupt for four innings in the top of the eighth as they got RBI from Burns, Craig, and
Sarah Musselman while taking advantage of a pair of Wilkes miscues to balloon their lead to 6-2 and needing just three outs to grab the win. Wilkes would score one run in the bottom of the eighth and brough the potential tying run to the plate but a popout to second base would seal the deal and give LVC the 6-3 win in game one.

Jessica Truitt again got the Dutchmen on the board in the first inning with a single up the middle to bring home
Jen Kaufman to give LVC the early advantage. LVC would try to add another on their third hit of the inning, this one off the bat of
Lindsey McCurdy but the runner was thrown out at the plate as the Dutchmen settled for the 1-0 lead after their first time at bat.
Sarah Musselman was cruising her way through the Wilkes lineup as she kept them scoreless as LVC held the 1-0 lead going into the top of the fifth. In the fifth, LVC would push their lead out to 3-0 scoring pair of runs on another Truitt hit.
Jen Kaufman would score and
Tori Hunyara would follow her after working her way out of a rundown to reach home. Wilkes would threaten in the bottom of the fifth with two runners on and just one out but Musselman would strikeout the next two hitters to preserve the 3-0 lead after five.
Following a scoreless sixth, the Dutchmen would add some important insurance runs in the seventh by taking advantage of three Colonel errors. Hunyara, who reached on an error, would score on a
Julia Craig single to start the scoring. Craig would later score on another Wilkes miscue as LVC led 5-0 with three outs to go. Wilkes would certainly make things interesting in the bottom of the seventh as the Colonels led off with a single followed by back-to-back doubles and LVC's lead shrunk to three. A bases-loaded walk and a fielder's choice would bring in two more runs and the tying run was at second base with two outs.
