ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley softball team used two very different methods to pick up a pair of wins over Wilkes in MAC crossover action on Saturday afternoon. The Dutchmen used a seventh-inning comeback to take the first game 8-7 while dominant pitching lifted LVC to a 6-0 shutout win in the nightcap. The Dutchmen are now 9-9 on the season while Wilkes falls to 2-12. The Dutchmen also celebrated their Autism Awareness Day with special jerseys.
Game one started with Wilkes jumping out to an early lead as the colonels took advantage of some walks and hit-by-pitches before Rachel Pritchard would help her own cause with a two-run single just over the third-base bag into left. A fielder's choice later in the inning would bring home another run as Wilkes led 3-0 after their first at bat. The Dutchmen would start to crawl back getting a run in both the first and second innings coming off RBI-singles by
Julia Craig and
Jessica Truitt respectively to pull within one.
In the top of the third, Wilkes was threatening with runners on the corners and no outs but
Erin Sinatra would limit the damage as she induced a double-play to trade two outs for the run as Wilkes led 4-2 headed into the bottom of the third. With the score still at 4-2, Wilkes would add a run on an Emma Stauffer single in the top of the fifth to push their lead out to three. LVC again responded in the bottom half of the frame as Craig touched home following a
Julia Forsythe sac fly.
With Wilkes holding a 5-3 lead as the game moved into the final stanza, Sarah Gibson would single up the middle to bring home a pair of Colonels as LVC's deficit was doubled to four. The Dutchmen continued their resilient ways at the plate starting with a
Sarah Musselman two-run single to left to cut the Wilkes lead in half. Next batter, Truitt doubled to deep right field to bring home another two runs and suddenly the game was tied 7-7.
Tori Hunyara would play hero a few batters later with a single up the middle to bring home
Lindsey McCurdy to give LVC the walk-off come-from-behind win 8-7.
