How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. – Widener University outscored Lebanon Valley 8-2 in the second half to edge the Flying Dutchmen 12-10 on Saturday afternoon in each team's 2021 MAC Commonwealth opener. LVC fell to 2-2, 0-1 MACC and the Pride improved to 1-3, 1-0 MACC.
Â
In the early going, the Dutchmen jumped out to an early 2-1 lead thanks to goals by
Livia Jackson and
Emily Beard. Later, with 17:46 left in the first half, Widener tied things up at 2-2 off Chelsea Forsyth's tally. Just 13 seconds later, with the Dutchmen on the advantage,
Jaclyn Little scored from
Veronica Venezia, and that sparked a four-goal spurt for LVC that ended with another Little tally with 10:38 left that made it 6-2.
Â
The Pride responded with two consecutive goals at 8:21 and 5:32 to come to within two at 6-4, but
Bailey Dills found the back of the net at 3:04, followed by
Brittany Hathaway's goal with 1:33 to go that gave LVC an 8-4 advantage heading into second-half action.
Â
Unfortunately for the Dutchmen, the second half was a much different story that the first. The half began with a Widener goal at 28:10, followed by
Sydney Zimmerman's tally at 27:47 from Venezia that made it 9-5. Then, the Pride netted back-to-back scores at 25:01 and 23:47 to make it 9-7, but
Veronica John's up-goal at 21:13 pushed the Dutchmen's lead back to 10-7.
Â
From there, Widener took over, beginning at 12:34 with Caroline Kelley's goal. The Pride continued corral draw controls and netted four more goals down the stretch and kept LVC's potent offense at bay, resulting in the 12-10 game.
