Softball Drops a Pair of Close Games at Stevenson

How It Happened
OWINGS MILLS, Md. – In the opening game of a doubleheader, Lebanon Valley was narrowly edged by Stevenson 6-5 in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Commonwealth Softball action.
 
The Dutchmen got off to a hot start in the top of the first when Sam Burns' single to center scored Jen Kaufman. LVC padded their lead later in the inning when reigning MAC Commonwealth Softball Player of the Week, Lindsey McCurdy, singled through the right side to score Burns. Finally, LVC scored its third run of the inning off Jessica Truitt's RBI-groundout.
 
Stevenson got one back right away after M. Fulton's RBI-single, but Sarah Musselman escaped further damage and got out of the inning to keep LVC's lead at 3-1. The Dutchmen added to their advantage in the top of the third off McCurdy's RBI-groundout, and Truitt then reached on an error that plated Burns to make it 5-1.
 
After the Mustangs added one in the bottom of the third, their comeback really started in the bottom of the fifth beginning with K. Perea's RBI-single. S. Stark then ripped a two-RBI double to center to even the game at 5-5.
 
In the top of the seventh, Burns singled with one out to put the go-ahead runner on base, but after Burns stole second, the Dutchmen were unable to scratch a run across and the game remained tied. In the bottom of the seventh, K. Briles began the bottom of the frame with a single and then stole second. After Fulton's flyout pushed Briles to third, Perea singled home Briles with two outs to give Stevenson the 6-5 win.
 
Inside the Numbers (Game One)
 - Burns finished 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Dutchmen.
 - Kaufman and Lia D'Angelo each registered two hits.
 - Musselman tossed 6.1 innings in the loss and allowed three earned runs and struck out two.
 - Stevenson's Fulton earned the win inside the circle after tossing seven innings and allowing four earned runs with five strikeouts.

How It Happened
Stevenson scored a run in the bottom of the 10th to edge LVC 1-0 in game two of today's doubleheader. The Dutchmen now sit at 3-2, 3-2 MACC, while the Mustangs improved to 7-3, 4-2 MACC.
 
In the bottom of the 10th inning, Stevenson's Fulton was placed on second base per NCAA rules. Perea sacrifice bunted Fulton over to third, then M. Hamp reached on a fielder's choice that score Fulton, resulting in the 1-0 extra-inning win for the Mustangs.
 
In the top of the first, LVC got runners on first and second, but we unable to get a run across after a double play. The Dutchmen also threatened in the top of the eighth when Musselman singled to left and then stole second, but two straight outs by LVC kept the game scoreless.
 
Inside the Numbers
 - Julia Craig led LVC's offense with a pair of hits.
 - Tori Hunyara, Alyssa Hamilton, and Musselman recorded one hit apiece.
 - Erin Sinatra tossed six scoreless innings for LVC and struck out four.
 - Stevenson's M. Heuer tossed all 10 innings to earn the win. She added six strikeouts.
 
Who's Next?
LVC and Stevenson will finish off their regular-season series tomorrow afternoon in a doubleheader at LVC Softball Park. First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m.
