How It Happened
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Despite outscoring Chatham 8-2 in the second half, LVC could not overcome an eight-goal halftime deficit and complete the comeback as they fell 12-10 in the 2020 season opener. LVC falls to 0-1 on the season while Chatham stays unscathed at 2-0.
LVC would open up the scoring when
Josh Croyle connected for the Dutchmen on a man-up possession just over four minutes into the contest. Chatham would answer with a pair of goals to take their first lead of the game with 4:18 to go in the first quarter.
Carson Frey would score his first career goal with 2:42 left in the first frame to tie the game up 2-2. This would be the final goal for the Dutchmen offense until the third quarter.
Chatham would gain control of the game near the end of the opening quarter as the Cougars would rattle off eight straight goals in the final 16:10 of the first half to hold a commanding 10-2 lead at halftime. The Cougars would add another tally early in the third quarter to stretch their lead out to a game-high nine at 11-2.
The Dutchmen would start their comeback effort with
Carson Frey getting hot on the offensive end scoring all three Dutchmen goals in the third quarter but LVC still trailed 11-5 with one quarter remaining. After trading goals to start the fourth, LVC would rattle off four straight goals to close out regulation but would come up just short as they fell 12-10 to the Cougars in the season opener.
Inside the Numbers
- Carson Frey recorded eight points on six goals and two assists in his collegiate debut.
- Josh Croyle added two goals for the Dutchmen.
- Michael Fisher and Trevor Holak also scored goals as well as adding an assist for LVC.
- Chatham was led by Kyle Prewitt who scored four goals while also dishing out two assists.
- Nick Serrano made a career-high 21 saves in net for the Dutchmen.
- LVC committed two penalties while the Cougars were charged with seven infractions.
- LVC outshot Chatham 46-40 with each team putting 33 shots on target.
- The Dutchmen committed 31 turnovers and were 15-25 on clear attempts while the Cougars only had 11 giveaways and were 20-22 on the clear.
- The Dutchmen held a 14-12 advantage in faceoffs.

The Dutchmen return to action tomorrow when they take on Westminster College (Pa.) in the final game of the Three Rivers Classic. Game time slated for 3 p.m. in Pittsburgh, Pa.
