How It Happened
WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University, a team that received votes in the opening D3baseball.com poll, scored nine runs in the fourth inning to overtake Lebanon Valley and eventually defeat the Flying Dutchmen 10-7 in LVC's 2020 season opener on Friday afternoon. LVC fell to 0-1, while the Hornets improved to 3-0.

The Dutchmen got off to a nice start, as Ethan Hurd singled home Bryan Towers and Michael Leri in the top of the second, giving LVC the early advantage. Then, with Brendan Ward rolling on the mound for LVC, the offense padded its advantage in the top of the fourth when Leri scored on a throwing error, followed by Towers' RBI-single to left that plated Chris DeClerico, making it 4-0 in favor of the Dutchmen.

Ward and LVC ran into big trouble in the bottom of the fourth, as the Hornets showed why they're one of the top teams in the country by racking up nine runs in the frame to take a 9-4 lead over LVC. Then, in the bottom of the fifth, Shenandoah added another run to go up 10-4, but the Dutchmen made things interesting in the top of the eighth when Mike Bulgia ripped a two-RBI double to right-center that plated Leri and TJ Holdredge. Next, DeClerico scored on a wild to pitch to bring LVC to within three at 10-7, but the Dutchmen were unable to get any closer and fell 10-7.
