How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. – Playing against each other for the second time in five days, Lebanon Valley again took down Dickinson, this time by a 69-56 score on Friday afternoon inside Sorrentino Gymnasium. The Flying Dutchmen improved to 5-7, while the Red Devils fell to 1-10. These two teams played in the Consolation Game of the Randolph-Macon Coaches Tournament back on Dec. 30 when LVC came away with a convincing 80-68 win.
The Dutchmen began the game on a 7-0 spurt, capped by
Trevor Covey's 3-pointer at 18:10 of the opening half. The home team continued to hold a steady advantage and went ahead by 11 at 24-13 with 7:54 remaining in the first after
Luis Garcia knocked down two consecutive free throws.
Justin Baker then connected on a layup, followed by
Jeremy Deihm's jumper that gave LVC its biggest lead of the afternoon at 28-13 with 6:22 to go in the first period.
Dickinson woke up and answered with a 12-5 run that spanned just over four minutes and cut the Dutchmen's lead to just seven at 32-25. Quickly, LVC answered and ended the first half on a 6-0 spurt to take a 13-point advantage (38-25) heading into halftime.
The Red Devils began the second half on a 7-0 run, which included five points from Lucas Curran and a layup from Ryan Robinson that brought the visitors to within six points at 38-32 with 18:08 to go. An LVC timeout halted Dickinson's momentum, however, and Deihm stopped the run with a layup off an assist from L. Garcia. Deihm's layup sparked a significant run from LVC that was capped by
Collin Jones' huge 3-pointer that put the Dutchmen back up by double digits at 46-35 with 12:14 remaining in the game.
Once again, Dickinson didn't go away and again cut the deficit to six at 46-40 after Travis Dobbins landed a triple with 11:34 left. The Red Devils continued to hang around, but clutch free throw shooting allowed the Dutchmen to stay on top, as LVC got to the free throw line 45 times and led by as many as 15 points down the stretch. Once the visitors got to within six, that was as close as they would get and LVC went on to win comfortably at 69-56.
