LEBANON, Pa. – Lebanon Valley's men's and women's cross country teams were impressive in the 47th annual LVC Dutchmen Invitational Saturday morning at Union Canal Tunnel Park. The LVC women finished second overall, while the men placed fourth at the invite.
On the women's side,
Keri Jones and
Lauren Wick guided the Flying Dutchmen to a second-place overall finish. LVC tied with Eastern University, but the Dutchmen were awarded second place thanks to a tiebreaker. Jones was LVC's top runner this afternoon and placed second overall with time of 18:22.70. Not far behind was Wick who placed third overall after crossing the line at 18:32.50 in the 5K race.
Kate Mowrey finished in 19:11.20 as the Dutchmen's third-lowest runner and 10th overall, while
Julia Brewer continued to show her versatility and crossed the line in 19:37.70, good for 16th overall. Freshman
Abigail Browne rounded out LVC's scorers with a time of 20:31.50.
Messiah placed first as team on the women's side, followed by the Dutchmen and Eastern, who finished second and third, respectively.
"This was a very strong effort to tie Eastern on points for second place," said head coach
James O'Brien '07, M'16. "They are an excellent team. Messiah showed why they are ranked fifth in the region but I was impressed with how we competed against them. This effort, for me, indicates that we are capable of being one of the top three teams in the conference which is a key goal for us."
"Keri and Lauren were unbelievably fast today up front in a race that contained a majority of the top runners in the conference," voiced O'Brien. "Kate, who missed a little time over the summer, essentially equaled her time from last fall which is a great step in the right direction.
Julia Brewer ran a stellar effort for our fourth while Abby closed out our scoring contingency with a big effort for a freshman. Hard to believe but this was a faster 1-5 average than our team last year that went on to finish 2nd at MACs."
Special Note: In addition to the men's and women's college runs today, high school boys and girls from all over the state came together and ran before the collegiate races this morning. Among them was Northern High School star Marlee Starliper, who not only demolished the course 5K record, but she ran the fastest ever cross country 5K run in the state of Pennsylvania with a time of 16:30.00.
On the men's side, LVC finished fourth this afternoon, led by
Noah Griffin who paced the Dutchmen by finishing sixth overall with a time of 26:46.00 in the 8K race.
Jeff Campagna crossed the line ninth overall with a mark of 27:01.70, followed by
Brandon Stasulli who crossed the line in 27:52.60.
Jordan Berger earned points for LVC with a time of 28:20.60, followed by Tanner Haynes at 28:36.30.
"This was a sturdy effort for our gentlemen and it was great to have
Garrett Santis back in action after a sprain during preseason," said Coach O'Brien. "
Noah Griffin and Jeff were a very strong 1-2 for us and then we had a solid pack that included a nice mix of freshman and upperclassmen. As we continue to get into the season I'm excited about the potential for forward momentum by this group."
Messiah took home the team title this morning, followed by Scranton and Eastern in second and third, respectively.
LVC is idle next week but looks to keep the momentum going into Lock Haven University's Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 21.
