Last Year Against Misericordia
Lebanon Valley suffered a heartbreaking 25-21 MAC loss to an up-and-coming Misericordia program in front of a tremendous Homecoming crowd of nearly 5,000 at a packed Arnold Field on Oct. 13, 2018. The Flying Dutchmen (0-6, 0-4 MAC) appeared to be in complete control late in the third quarter when Ryan Fink's second rushing touchdown of the game put them ahead 21-10. The defense forced an MU three-and-out but a fumble on the ensuing punt return allowed the Cougars (5-1, 4-0 MAC) a short field that led to a touchdown and two-point conversion just 54 seconds into the fourth quarter. The team's traded possessions three times in the final quarter before Misericordia put together what proved to be the game-winning nine-play, 85-yard drive that was capped with a 25-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brady Williams to a tackle-breaking Isaiah Williams. The extra point put the visitors out in front for the first time in the second half at 25-21, leaving just 1:16 for LVC to work with. The Dutchmen moved into MU territory when quarterback Kody Kegarise connected with tight end Patrick Clark for an 11-yard gain but Kegarise was picked off when he tried to connect with wide receiver Zeke Wassell in the end zone after rolling out on a broken play. The Cougars took over at their own 10-yard line with 28 seconds remaining and used two kneel downs to escape with the narrow victory. Fink was the team's sparkplug in the second half, rushing eight times during LVC's methodical opening drive of the third quarter and capping the scoring march with a 14-yard touchdown run that put the Dutchmen ahead 14-10 at the 7:18 mark. Things got even better when cornerback Tyler Okomba demolished MU running back David Cromwell on the ensuing possession, forcing a fumble that was recovered and returned by safety Anthony Jenkins to the Cougars' 13-yard line. Two Fink touches later and Lebanon Valley was in the end zone again, now with a 21-10 lead at the 2:22 mark of the third quarter. LVC opened the game with an impressive four-play, 50-yard drive that ended when running back Steve Salerno broke a tackle and scampered 11 yards to paydirt just 1:31 into the contest. Misericordia responded with a field goal on the team's first drive of the day and eventually took a 10-7 lead into halftime thanks to a five-play, 74-yard scoring drive midway through the second quarter.

Last Time Out
LVC picked up its first win of the young season after crushing Alvernia 31-12 in each team's MAC opener on Saturday, Sept. 21. The visitor's opening drive stalled out and LVC took over at its own 11-yard line. Hunter Wilson began the drive in a style and broke free for a 36-yard rush to LVC's 47-yard line. Later in the drive, Kody Kegarise completed back-to-back passes to Tyeair Diggs (four yards) and Patrick Clark (five yards), and on fourth and one at Alvernia's 38, the Dutchmen gambled and went for it and it paid off, as Wilson rushed for six yards to keep LVC's drive alive. LVC continued to drive down the field, and on third down and seven, Kegarise rushed for a 17-yard touchdown to cap an impressive 10-play, 89-yard drive that took 4:30 off the clock. Later in the quarter, the Dutchmen's defense forced a turnover when Alvernia's quarterback Kevin Washington Jr. fumbled, forced by Tom Miller, and Brandon Brubaker recovered the ball at LVC's 43-yard line and returned it all the way to Alvernia's 10. On LVC's fourth play of the drive, third and goal, Kegarise found Dylan Baxter in the endzone for an eight-yard touchdown that put LVC ahead 14-0 late in the first quarter after Nick Bentz knocked through the extra point. Some sloppiness from both teams set in in the second quarter, as each team traded off a few fumbles and several punts. Late in the second, the Dutchmen finally put something together when their drive started at Alvernia's 25-yard line after just a 17-yard punt by the Golden Wolves' Matt Mitchell gave LVC excellent field position. The home team gained just two yards before Bentz knocked through a 40-yard field goal with 32 seconds to go, giving the Dutchmen a solid 17-0 advantage heading into halftime. The third quarter featured several more punts from both teams, as each squad's defense clamped down. At the 8:29 mark of the third, the visitors finally got on the board when Scott caught a 39-yard td pass from Sample, but the extra point was blocked by Logan Grauer, making it a 17-6 lead for LVC. With 6:58 remaining in the third, Alvernia began a drive at its own 30-yard line and reached LVC's 49, but on fourth down and seven, the Golden Wolves elected to go for it, but QB Sample's pass was picked off by Tyler Okomba, giving the Dutchmen terrific field position again. In the fourth, the Dutchmen put the game away for good early on after Wilson began the drive with a 33-yard run to Alvernia's 21 yard-line. On the very next play, Kegarise hit Patrick Clark for a 21-yard touchdown, giving the Dutchmen a comfortable 24-6 lead. Later on in the fourth, Kegarise capped one of his most impressive games as a Dutchmen with a three-yard TD run to put the home team ahead 31-6. Alvernia got six points back on its ensuing drive when Malcolm Carey broke away for a 75-yard touchdown, but again Grauer blocked the extra point and LVC went on to hold for the 31-12 victory.

Misericordia then crushed Keystone 47-7 in an exhibition game before enjoying an early bye week last Saturday. In the Cougars' loss to the Green Terror, QB Brady Williams, the reigning MAC Offensive Player of the Year, went 19-for-32 with two TDs and two picks. He was also sacked three times. Jake Nagle led the Mis defense with seven total tackles, including five solo. The Cougars went 8-3 in 2018 and advanced to the MAC-Centennial Bowl where they were demolished by Ursinus, 70-14.
