How It Happened
CARLISLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley was outscored by Dickinson 9-4 in the opening half as the Flying Dutchmen eventually fell 19-12 in their 2019 season opener after the Red Devils pulled away late. Dickinson improved to 1-0, while LVC fell to 0-1.
Less than a minute into the game, the Dutchmen struck first when
Julia Gabriel scored her first collegiate goal, an unassisted score 53 seconds into the first half. Dickinson responded in a big way, however, and scored six consecutive goals over the span of seven minutes to overtake LVC 6-1.
Emily Federowicz put an end to the Red Devils' spurt with a goal from
Brittany Hathaway at 16:19, and
Jaclyn Little followed it up with an unassisted tally a little over a minute later.
Then,
Veronica Venezia got in on the action and cut the deficit to just two at 6-4 when she found the back of the net with 13:51 left in the first, but Dickinson ended the opening half on a 3-0 run to take a 9-4 lead into halftime.
Coming out of the halftime break, the home team scored three straight to increase its lead to 12-4 with 26:44 remaining in the game. From there, though, the Dutchmen answered with six consecutive goals of their own, beginning with Hathaway's up goal, followed by another for the freshman.
Makenzie Kelley then found the back of the net, followed by a Federowicz goal. After Kelley netted another, Hathaway scored her third of the contest for the hat trick. Later, LVC came to within two at 13-11 with 15:11 remaining, but a five-goal run by Dickinson made it 18-11 with 1:54 to go, a deficit too large for the Dutchmen to come back from, as they eventually fell 19-12.
