Lycoming def. Lebanon Valley 3-1 (25-20, 19-25, 22-25, 26-28)
How It Happened
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley volleyball team dropped a tough four-setter to Lycoming College in the MAC Commonwealth Tournament play-in game on Monday night. LVC sees their 2019 campaign come to a close while Lycoming advances to the semifinal round where they will meet up with top-seeded Stevenson University on Wednesday.
It was the Dutchmen jumping out to the early lead as LVC would take the first set over the Warriors. Lycoming led 13-9 around the midway point of the opening set before the Dutchmen would win five of the next six points to tie the set 14-14. The set was later tied 20-20 before LVC would win five straight points, three of which coming off of kills by
Jayna Class, and LVC would take the opening set.
Lycoming would use a big run of their own in the second set. The score was tied 12-12 before the Warriors would rattle off seven straight points and take a 19-12 controlling lead. Lycoming would eventually win the set 25-19 and even the match at one set apiece. The third set saw LVC jump out to a big lead early after a 6-0 run gave the Dutchmen a 9-4 advantage. Lycoming would claw back into the set and later, with LVC leading 20-19, Lycoming would win six of the last eight points and now held a 2-1 set lead.
In the fourth set, Lycoming jumped out to a quick lead as the Warriors opened up a nine-point lead at 15-6. With their backs against the wall trailing 22-18 late in the set, LVC would win six straight points and led 24-22 and serving for set point to force a decisive fifth set. Lycoming would hold strong and send the set into a tiebreak as the score reached a 25-25 tie. LVC would win the next point and again served for set point, but Lycoming picked up three straight points and would take the set 28-26, and the match 3-1.
Reily Shelly led LVC offensively as she recorded a career-high 24 kills on the night.
Jayna Class also recorded 14 kills for the Dutchmen. Class,
Grace Powell, and
Kaitlyn Reed each tallied a pair of blocks. Class and Reed also recorded two service aces each.
Mikiah Sangrey led the Dutchmen with 46 assists.
Alice Thorsen paced LVC defensively with 15 digs, followed by Reed with 11 and Shelly who posted seven digs.
