How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley was narrowly defeated by Shenandoah University 3-2 in overtime of the 2019 ECAC Division III Field Hockey Championship game at Arnold Field on Sunday afternoon. The Flying Dutchmen finished their season with a 13-8 record, while the Hornets ended their campaign with a 17-4 mark.
Heading into the fourth quarter, LVC found itself down 2-1 and needed to score in a hurry. With just over nine minutes remaining in regulation, the Dutchmen generated a penalty corner.
Taylor Pentz passed it to
Cecile Kat, and Kat then gave it to
Danielle Alba, who rocketed one into the back of the net, evening the game for LVC at 2-2. The teams remained knotted for the rest of regulation, and the contest went into OT.
The visiting Hornets applied early pressure in the extra period, as Kelsey Jones let off a shot, but
Nikki Willi was there for the save. Then, just over six minutes in, Shenandoah generated a penalty corner, but Taylor Hayes' shot sailed just wide. Later, the Hornets' immense amount of pressure paid off when Kelsey Jones gave a pass from the left side of the corner to Hayes, who tipped it past Willi and into the back of the net for the OT-victory.
LVC was the first to score this afternoon when Kat outran the defense and snuck one past Isabella Morande for her 20th goal of the season that gave the Dutchmen a 1-0 advantage 11:08 into the first quarter. Less than a minute later, however, Shenandoah evened the score when Hayes netted her first of the game off another tip-in. In the closing minutes of the second, Hayes scored her second of the day off a hard shot, giving the visitors a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.
