How It Happened
CHESTER, Pa. – Lebanon Valley's football team outscored Widener 27-7 in the second half and overcame a 14-point halftime deficit, led by
Hunter Wilson's five total touchdowns, to top the Pride 41-35 on Saturday afternoon. LVC improves to 3-3 on the season while Widener drops to 3-4.
The second half was dominated by the Dutchmen on both sides of the ball. LVC trailed by two scores with Widener receiving the kickoff to start the second half of play but the Dutchmen defense would force a quick punt which would become a theme in the second half. The Dutchmen offense took the ball right down the field on their opening drive of the third quarter, punching it in on a three-yard carry by Wilson cutting the deficit to seven points with 9:18 to go in the third.
On the ensuing drive for the Pride, Widener would go three-and-out and have to punt again as the Dutchmen would take over on their own 20. The LVC offense would work their way down the field with little resistance until the Dutchmen were stopped on third down, forcing a fourth-and-three at the Widener 36. LVC would elect to go for it and the handoff to Wilson up the middle was initially stopped short, but Wilson's second effort would take him across the line to gain and give the Dutchmen a first down at the Widener 32-yard line. On the very next play,
Kody Kegarise would fake the hand off and roll out to the right before finding Wilson on the far sideline for a 32-yard touchdown pass to tie the game, 28-28, with just over two minutes remaining in the third quarter.
The Dutchmen defense would again stifle the Widener offense and force another punt with 38 seconds remaining in the period.
Logan Grauer would come flying in off the edge and block the punt followed by a scoop-and-score from 50 yards out by
Travis Fischer and the Dutchmen took a 34-28 advantage into the fourth.
On the first drive for Widener after the blocked punt, Sean McGaughey would find James Gillespie for a 32-yard pick up for the Pride's first trip into LVC territory since the second quarter. On the next play however, McGaughey's pass would be intercepted by
Anthony Jenkins. The Dutchmen would capitalize on the turnover when Wilson broke free up the middle, breaking a few tackles in the process, for a 63-yard touchdown score, his fifth touchdown on the afternoon, and LVC led 41-28 with just over 12 minutes to play.
Later in the quarter, Widener took another shot downfield after reaching Dutchmen territory, but this time it was
Brendan Yetter picking off a McGaughey pass to keep the Pride scoreless for the half. The Pride would score late with just five ticks left on the clock on a Gillespie touchdown reception to bring the game within six. Widener would recover the ensuing onside kick at midfield giving the Pride one last chance, but McGaughey's Hail Mary attempt was intercepted by
Joe Fay to put the nail in the coffin officially as the Dutchmen completed the comeback for the 41-35 victory.
In the opening half, the Dutchmen were only able to muster one first down on their opening drive and Widener took over inside their own 15-yard line. Widener's first offensively play was a good one though as Tahir Cruse took a handoff at the 11 and took it all the way to the house for an 89-yard touchdown run to put the Pride ahead 7-0 just 2:20 into the game.
On the ensuing drive by the Dutchmen, they would move the ball into Widener territory but were stopped on third down and forced to punt once again.
Patrick Clark would again pin the Pride deep, this time the LVC punt unit would down the ball at the two-yard line. The Pride's offense was clicking early as they worked their way down the field and McGaughey seven-yard touchdown pass to Joe Bristow would cap the 11-play, 98-yard drive and LVC found themselves down 14-0 late in the first quarter.
The Dutchmen would respond their next time out on offense while also capitalizing on a Widener kickoff that was sprayed out of bounds. The Dutchmen would start with the ball at their own 35 after the penalty and would methodically march down the field led by Wilson. Wilson would take a delayed hand-off inside the red zone and found the end zone on a 12-yard carry to get LVC on the board, 14-7, with 12:08 left in the first half. Widener's offense continued to give LVC fits as it took just three plays to go 75 yards, capped by a 54-yard touchdown pass to Ty Holbert to push Widener's lead back up to two-scores, 21-7, with 10:38 to play in the first half.
On the following drive for the Dutchmen offense, LVC would put together their longest drive of the game. During the drive, the Dutchmen faced a 3rd-and-10 from their own 42, before
Kody Kegarise found Andrew Olsen up the sideline for 43 yards down to the Pride 15. A few plays later, Wilson would punch it in from one-yard out to punctuate the 10-play, 71-yard scoring drive and the Dutchmen trailed 21-14 with just under six minutes left in the half.
Towards the end of the half, the Pride defense would force a punt deep in LVC territory and would start final drive of the half at midfield with just under three minutes until halftime. McGaughey would hit Gillespie, up the near sideline to 39 yards and McGaughey's third touchdown pass of the half and Widener pushed their lead to 28-14 with 1:51 to go. The score would remain 28-14 into intermission.
