LEBANON, Pa. – Lebanon Valley's men's and women's cross country teams put on an impressive show while serving as hosts for the 46th Dutchmen Invitational at Union Canal Tunnel Park on Saturday morning, Sept. 8.
The women took home the team trophy, with
Lauren Wick and
Kate Mowrey finishing 1-2 in the 5k race, while the men earned a runner-up finish behind the performance of individual champion
Garrett Santis in the 8k event.
Wick and Mowrey paced the field with strong efforts, as the reigning Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Rookie of the Year crossed the line in 19:07.17, while Mowrey finished little more than a second behind her teammate.
Next up for the Flying Dutchmen was the duo of
Keri Jones and
Lauren Bunke, coming home back-to-back in sixth and seventh place, respectively. Jones posted a time of 19:30.27, while Bunke continued the strong start to her freshman season with a 19:35.96 effort.
Sarah Grow rounded out LVC's scoring group with a run of 19:46.73, good enough to earn her a 12th-place finish. LVC head coach
James O'Brien '07, M'16 was very impressed with his team's early-season effort, comparing this year's group to his 2013 squad, arguably the deepest and most talented roster he's put together to date.
"Today's five-runner average of 19:25 very closely matched our 2013 team (19:24)," he said. "Most importantly, we finished eight runners before 2013's fifth finisher so it's obvious we are quite deep with talent. Last week was a good debut but our ladies turned it up a notch for our home meet. We were just fantastic across the board today and I'm very excited as we continue to find our path this fall."
Juliana Ross,
Hannah Kramlik, and
Mackenzie Lausch were also solid in completing the top eight of which O'Brien mentioned. Then it was
Susie Schrum,
Marah Hoffman,
Julia Resele,
Taylor Laliberte,
Anna Donnelly,
Becky Ford,
Charlotte Jones,
Madison Coleman, and
Kayla Glant rounding out the Dutchmen contingency.
Santis stole the show on the men's side, winning the race by a comfortable margin of more than four seconds (26:36.40).
Jeff Campagna added a top-five effort thanks to his time of 26:53.38, while
Noah Brady just missed out on a top-10 finish with an effort of 27:22.21.
Michael Dworzak's time of 27:58.10 was good enough to clinch him 17th place and
Noah Griffin finished less than one second behind his teammate in 18th thanks to an effort of 27:58.69, completing Lebanon Valley's scoring contingent.
"This was a very strong showing," said O'Brien about his men's squad. "We ran well last weekend but I'll admit that I was slightly concerned as to how that 5k event would translate to the longer 8K distance for this group. While we need to continue to work to close down our gap throughout the year, I am pleased with how well we competed today. In particular, our freshman showed great aptitude in their first-ever 8K and that helped tremendously."
Joining Griffin in turning in a solid run as a freshman was teammate
Tanner Hayes in 28th place, while
Noah Baxter,
Daniel O'Toole,
Nathaniel Clugston, and
Damian Martinez completed the team's scoring group.
The Dutchmen are idle next week but will look to keep the momentum rolling when they return to action at the Lock Haven Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 22.
