Series History
Saturday's game is the 34th meeting all-time ... Lycoming leads the series 26-7, winning the first 21 games to begin the series, but LVC has won six of the last 10 ... The first meeting was on Nov. 19, 1955, a 25-7 Lycoming win ... The two teams played in 1956, then did not play again until 1985 ... The Dutchmen held off a late Lyco charge to win 20-17 at Arnold Field in the most recent meeting last fall … Lyco earned a narrow 27-24 win the last time the two teams met in Williamsport in 2016 ... Not since LVC's 28-14 victory in 2010 has a game been decided by more than one possession … Two of the last four meetings have gone to overtime … The most recent OT matchup saw the Dutchmen emerge victorious in a 41-38 extra-session thriller at Arnold Field in 2015 … LVC's 14-7 win over Lycoming in Annville in 2013 was the program's first over a nationally-ranked team.
Last Week
Lebanon Valley's home opener was spoiled by Wilkes on Saturday afternoon, as the Colonels erased an early deficit and escaped Arnold Field with a 30-27 overtime victory. The Flying Dutchmen looked poised to pull off the comeback victory after scoring the game-tying touchdown with less than 30 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter but as he did all afternoon, WU quarterback Jose Tabora led the way during the visitors' game-winning touchdown drive in overtime. With the Colonels trailing 27-24 following
Nick Bentz's 42-yard field goal that capped LVC's only overtime possession, Tabora completed two passes of 10-plus yards before sneaking across the goal line from one yard out to finish off Wilkes' OT drive and give the visitors their first win over the Dutchmen in eight years. The loss was especially hard to take after Lebanon Valley put together a clutch 10-play, 61-yard drive that began with
Dre Burch's 27-yard kick return with 3:15 remaining and ended when quarterback
Kody Kegarise connected with wide receiver
Dallas Arner for a two-yard touchdown in the left corner of the end zone with just 22 ticks left in the fourth quarter. Kegarise continued his strong start to the season, finishing 14-21 for 159 yards and a pair of touchdowns to go along with 39 rushing yards.
Tyler Lutz had a big game, racking up a game-high 15 tackles, including 1.5 TFL, one sack, and one pass breakup. Prior to Saturday's game, kicker
Nick Bentz had never converted a field goal longer than 40 yards. Against the Colonels, he was 2-2 with makes from 42 and 40 yards out, respectively.
Last Year
Lebanon Valley used a bruising run game and a defense that made timely plays to hold off MAC rival Lycoming on Saturday, Nov. 4. The Dutchmen claimed a 20-17 victory on Senior Day at Arnold Field. Clinging to a three-point lead with less than a minute remaining, the defense was called upon to seal the win and the unit answered the call when linebacker
Tim Schumacher forced a third-down fumble on Lyco's side of midfield. The Warriors recovered the loose ball but gave up precious field position and quarterback Chase Williams' fourth-down attempt was dropped near midfield with eight seconds left, sealing the victory for LVC. The Dutchmen racked up 404 yard of total offense, while the defense held Lycoming to 311 total yards. Lebanon Valley rushed for an impressive 266 yards on 55 carries. LVC won the turnover battle 2-1. Linebacker
Tim Schumacher forced a pair of fumbles, safety
Anthony Jenkins recovered one, and safety
Zachary Adams came away with the game's only interception. Running back
Jon Jones racked up 116 yards on 24 attempts.
Previewing With Coach Buehler
Head coach
Joe Buehler '89 sat down for his weekly interview, hitting on a number of topics, including bright spots from the JV team's most recent victory and his thoughts on the upcoming contest against Lycoming.
LVC's Offense
Lebanon Valley's offense has been led by sophomore quarterback
Kody Kegarise through the first two games this season. He leads the team in rushing with 92 yards and one touchdown on the ground, while also throwing for 262 yards and three scores. He's also completing nearly 60 percent of his passes and has yet to throw an interception.
Ryan Fink, the team's top running back, is averaging nearly 4.7 yards per carry to go along with 84 rushing yards and one touchdown.
Tyeair Diggs has proved LVC's top weapon at wide receiver, pulling in six catches for 140 yards and two scores.
Gary Wise has also pulled in six balls for 41 yards. Fellow wideout
Dallas Arner caught his first touchdown pass in the team's game against Wilkes last week. The Dutchmen will look to protect the football better than they have so far this fall after losing four fumbles in two outings.
LVC's Defense
The Dutchmen defense will look to clamp down after allowing an average of nearly 500 yards of total offense in each of its first two contests. Linebacker
Tyler Lutz has impressed through the early portion of the season. He leads the team in tackles with 20, including three TFL and 1.5 sacks to go along with one pass breakup. Safety
Zachary Adams (17) and linebacker
Alex Trujillo (12) have also registered double-digit tackles. Defensive ends
Austin Maguire and
Wyett McLeod have each recorded a sack, with McLeod forcing a fumble that fellow defensive lineman
Jacob Whitfield recovered against Wilkes last week. LVC will try to be more opportunistic moving forward, as the team is currently -3 in turnover margin.
LVC's Special Teams
Special teams continues to be an area of strength for LVC. Most recently, kicker
Nick Bentz impressed. The junior drilled a pair of field goals against Wilkes; one from 40 yards out and the other from 42 yards away. Return man
Tyeair Diggs started the year with a bang, taking one kickoff back 96 yards for a touchdown en route to earning MAC Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Dre Burch has also looked strong in the return game and opposing teams have done their best to keep from kicking the ball deep against the Dutchmen.
Adam Domovich has also proved a weapon in the punt game, forcing three of his attempts to be fair caught and three others to be downed inside the 20-yard line.
Scouting Lycoming
Lycoming is off to 1-1 start, falling to Susquehanna in the season opener before picking up a 33-19 victory at Widener last weekend. Jacob Fimbres and Keith Batkowski have each surpassed the 100-yard rushing mark for the season, with Batkowski and quarterback Elijah Shemory having scored one touchdown each. Shemory has thrown for 334 yards and two touchdowns but has also been picked off four times. Nick Costello continues to impress at wide receiver, racking up 126 yards and two touchdowns. Ahmad Curtis leads the team with 11 tackles, including 2.5 TFL and a pair of sacks. Joe Pinzka and Mike Kalyan have also recorded 10-plus tackles. The Warriors have also been turnover-prone, having coughed it up six times this season.
Warriors Pick Up Awards
Lyco's success in last weekend's victory was noticed around the country, with defensive tackle Ahmad Curtis and kicker Jamie Fisher earning spots on the most recent D3football.com Team of the Week. Fisher also picked up MAC Special Teams Player of the Week honors, while linebacker Zach Kovach was pegged MAC Defensive Player of the Week.
Who's Next?
The bye week comes early for LVC this fall, as the team is idle next weekend. The Dutchmen return to action when they host Widener at Arnold Field on Saturday, Sept. 29.
