How It Happened
Lebanon Valley overcame an early deficit and used a big seventh inning at the plate to earn a 9-3 victory in the opening contest of a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader at Stevenson on Saturday afternoon, April 7.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Flying Dutchmen (7-6, 3-2 MAC Commonwealth) used small ball to get things rolling and draw even in the top of the third.
Cheyanne Brown led off the frame with a bunt single before stealing second base. After
Jen Kaufman walked,
Annie McClain moved the runners with a sacrifice bunt and
Savannah Toth drove in Brown with a single to center field.
Lexi Windsor tied it up when her single up the middle plated Kaufman from third one at-bat later.
Three and a half scoreless innings ensued before LVC went to work in the top of the seventh to the tune of seven runs on five hits and four Mustang errors. Windsor put the visitors on top for the first time with a one-out RBI double down the left field line and
Kate Whelski drove in Toth thanks to a single during the ensuing at-bat. Thanks to a number of SU mistakes in the field, the Dutchmen added five unearned runs before their half of the stanza was through.
The Mustangs (9-8, 1-2 MAC Commonwealth) got one back in the bottom of the seventh but it proved far too little too late, as pitcher
Maddie Abbot got Kate Finnen to ground out to McClain at shortstop to end the game.
