How It Happened
Lebanon Valley put together a furious rally that fell painstakingly short in the team 6-5 loss at Lycoming in double overtime in the MAC Commonwealth Championship Tournament Play-In Game on Monday afternoon, April 30.
Reigning MAC Commonwealth Offensive Player of the Week
Kevin Beaver recorded his third consecutive hat trick, while
Coleman Wagner and
Matt Torrence caused four turnovers apiece. Torrence added seven ground balls, Wagner had five, and
Nick Mowry scooped up three.
After falling behind 4-0 in the first quarter, the Flying Dutchmen (9-8) were forced to play catch up the rest of the way. Torrence finally broke LVC's dry spell with a goal off an assist from
Max Warmingham with just 55 seconds left in the second quarter.
The Warriors (10-6) scored their fifth goal of the game less than four minutes after the break but the visitors responded with a pair of markers before the third quarter was over. Nate Owsinksi cut the deficit to 5-2 with a score off a feed from
Barrett Campbell at the 5:48 mark and
Kevin Beaver drew LVC to within two with a strike less than two minutes later.
Beaver proved the go-to guy in the fourth quarter as well, netting his second goal of the afternoon with 3:34 to play before completing the hat trick with the equalizer with three minutes remaining.
The Dutchmen had a handful of chances to end things in the first and second overtime periods, getting off four total shots in the extra sessions. However, it was Lyco that was the first to convert the goal that kept its season alive when Garrett Huff found the back of the net 1:02 into the third overtime.
