Softball Drops a Pair at Alvernia

How It Happened
Lebanon Valley dropped a 5-1 decision at Alvernia in the opening contest of a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, April 28.
 
The Flying Dutchmen got on the board first thanks to back-to-back doubles from Jen Kaufman and Annie McClain to begin the game. McClain's extra-base knock drove in McClain and LVC held a 1-0 advantage after the first frame.
 
A Lebanon Valley error aided the Golden Wolves in scoring a pair of two-out, unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning before tacking on three more in the bottom of the fourth thanks to two doubles in the stanza.
 
LVC had chances to cut into the deficit but left 10 runners on base, including coming away with nothing after loading the bases in the top of the fifth.
 
Inside the Circle
- Maddie Abbot suffered the loss for LVC after allowing three earned runs on nine hits.
- Lexi Windsor made a relief appearance for the Dutchmen, giving up no hits in one inning of work.
- Riley Shields picked up her first win of the day when she allowed just one run on six hits and three walks.
 
At the Plate
- Jen Kaufman and Annie McClain each had two-hit outings.
- The back-to-back doubles from Kaufman and McClain to begin the game accounted for the team's only extra-base hits.
- Rylee Shockley and Robin Feaster managed one single apiece.
- Alvernia doubled four times in game one.
 
Around the Diamond
- Jen Kaufman had the only stolen base for the Dutchmen.
- Morgan Psiuk swiped a bag for AU.
- Savannah Toth threw out Sarah Reinert attempting to steal in the bottom of the first.

How It Happened
Alvernia's big third inning did in Lebanon Valley in the team's 9-1 loss in the second outing of a conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Golden Wolves racked up seven hits and scored five runs in the third stanza to put LVC in a 6-0 hole midway through the contest. The home team tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth before the Flying Dutchmen got something started in the top half of the ensuing frame.
 
Jen Kaufman singled before Annie McClain's double to left field moved her along to third base. Madison Watson brought her in with a sacrifice fly to left field but LVC was unable to make any more of a dent in the top of the fifth.
 
The Dutchmen had an opportunity to put together a rally when they loaded the bases in the top of the sixth but were turned away by Alvernia pitcher Riley Shields.
 
Inside the Circle
- Lexi Windsor took the loss for the Dutchmen after surrendering eight earned runs on 14 hits and three walks.
- Alvernia's Riley Shields earned her second win of the day, allowing one run on six hits and three walks.
 
At the Plate
- Annie McClain's fifth-inning double was LVC's lone extra-base hit.
- Jen Kaufman scored the only run for Lebanon Valley.
- McClain and Alison Noga each finished 1-for-2 with a walk.
- JoAnnah Lim and Jocelyn Flores drove in two runs each for AU.
 
Around the Diamond
- LVC committed a pair of errors, while the Golden Wolves were clean in the field.
- Neither team attempted to steal a base.
- Shortstop Annie McClain and Kate Whelski at second base each racked up three assists.
 
Playoff Picture
Lebanon Valley finished conference play at 9-7 and clinched the No. 3 seed in the upcoming MAC Commonwealth Championship Tournament. The Dutchmen will host the tourney at the LVC Softball Park. The team hosts Messiah for its opening contest on Friday afternoon, May 4.
 
Who's Next?
The Dutchmen host Juniata for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon, May 1. It is the team's regular season finale and the games will serve as part of LVC's annual Autism Awareness Day.
