How It Happened
Lebanon Valley's bats were on display in the team's 9-7 victory over conference rival Widener in the opening contest of a doubleheader at the LVC Softball Park on Wednesday afternoon, April 18.
The Flying Dutchmen (14-9, 9-4 MAC Commonwealth) racked up 15 total hits in the win, including six extra-base knocks. A two-run home run from
Savannah Toth in the bottom of the fourth inning put an exclamation point on the team's scoring in game one.
After Widener (10-13, 5-6 MAC Commonwealth) got on the board first in the top of the opening frame, LVC responded with a six-run bottom of the first that saw the home team rack up seven hits and take advantage of a pair of errors by the Pride. Back-to-back doubles by
Rylee Shockley and
Kristi Langhans did the most damage in the stanza, driving in four Dutchmen.
Lebanon Valley added a tally in the bottom of the third when Langhans' single through the left side plated
Kate Whelski from third base and after the visitors scored their third run of the contest in the top of the fourth, Toth answered with a monster shot over the fence in left center field to halt the Pride momentum in the bottom half.
Widener cut into the deficit with three runs in the top of the fifth and added another in the top of the seventh. A Katie Sterling double moved a pair of runners into scoring position in the stanza but pitcher
Sarah Musselman used back-to-back pop ups to slow the rally before getting the final batter to line out to
Madison Watson at third base to end the game.

How It Happened
Thanks to a pair of unfortunate injuries and a lack of timely hitting, Lebanon Valley saw one slip away in the team's 7-5, nine-inning loss to Widener in the second tilt of a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader at LVC Softball Park on Wednesday afternoon.
After stranding a runner at third base to end the eighth inning, the Flying Dutchmen (14-10, 9-5 MAC Commonwealth) watched as pitcher
Maddie Abbot was knocked out of the game when a hard hit ball collided solidly with her lower leg. The Pride (11-13, 6-6 MAC Commonwealth) took advantage of LVC's misfortune and eventually scored a pair of unearned runs following a Dutchmen error.
Lebanon Valley got an early boost from
Savannah Toth's second two-run home run of the day in the bottom of the first inning.
Widener cut the deficit in half after Lauren DelRomano's two-out triple plated the team's first run in the top of the third before drawing even at 2-2 in the fourth frame with a two-out single through the right side that drove in Taylor Allen.
After
Kate Whelski led off the bottom of the fourth with a double to left center field,
Rylee Shockley drove her in with a single up the middle, putting the Dutchmen back out in front midway through the nightcap.
Disaster struck for the home team in the top of the fifth when a pair of errors led to three unearned Widener runs and an injury to center fielder
Jen Kaufman forced the speedy freshman off the field for the rest of the afternoon.
Shockley's two-out bloop single in the bottom of the fifth allowed
Tianna Yanoscak and a pinch-running
Kristi Langhans to score to tie things up but LVC was never able to plate the run that would have sealed the doubleheader sweep.
