How It Happened
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Lebanon Valley dropped a 79-69game to Misericordia in the Second Round of the Division III ECAC Women's Basketball Tournament, hosted by Washington & Jefferson, on Friday afternoon. The Dutchmen's season ended at 15-13, while the Cougars Improved to 18-10 and advanced to tomorrow's semifinal round.
Heading into the fourth quarter, LVC found itself down by nine points.
Becky Evans knocked down a pair of free throws at 9:18 of the fourth to bring the Dutchmen to within seven at 60-53, and after a Misericordia turnover, Evans made a layup at 8:52 to cut the Cougars' advantage to just five at 62-55. From there, a crucial 7-2 run by Misericordia put it ahead by 12 at 69-57 with 5:37 remaining, but LVC responded with a 10-3 spurt spanning over two minutes of game action to come back to within five at 72-67 with 3:21 left. However, the Cougars never let the Dutchmen get any closer, and Misericordia made its free throws down the stretch to go on and win 79-69.
This afternoon's game was fast-paced right from the beginning as it was tied early on at 6-6 with 6:50 left in the first. The Cougars went on to score the contest's next 11 points, though, to go up 17-11 with 3:38 to go. Later, a 3-pointer from Kalynn Sefcik put Misericordia ahead 22-8 with 1:48 remaining, but
Anne Lehr's jumper with 30 seconds left and
Molly Galvin's fast-break layup made it just a 10-point deficit for the Dutchmen heading into the second quarter.
In the second period, the Cougars got ahead by as many as 16 at 34-18 with 5:36 to go, but a 9-0 run by LVC, capped by Lehr's layup, again brought the Dutchmen back to within striking distance at 34-27 with 3:12 remaining. Misericordia responded, however, and ended the second on a 7-4 run to take a 41-31 advantage heading into halftime. The back-and-forth theme continued in the third period, as Misericordia got ahead by as many as 15, but the Dutchmen cut it to nine thanks to a last-second layup by
Jen Kaufman to make it 60-51 going into the final quarter.
