How It Happened
SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley's women's lacrosse team dropped a 14-13 heartbreaker in overtime to Swarthmore on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action. The Dutchmen fell to 2-3, while the Garnet improved to 2-0.
With Swat ahead 13-12 with five seconds remaining,
Makenzie Kelley netted a goal to even the score and send the game into overtime in thrilling fashion. Swat won the opening draw control in overtime and Tess Wild ran down the field and ripped a shot, but it was saved by
Hannah Oliveras, who played the final 27:14 and relieved starter
Leah Franklin. Later in overtime,
Veronica Venezia saw an opportunity to win it, but her free position attempt went just high. Kelley then got another free position shot for LVC, but her attempt was saved. With 1:27 remaining in overtime. From there, Swarthmore's Wild scooped up a ground ball after a Dutchmen turnover and eventually passed the ball to Elizabeth Wainwright, who scored the game winner with a minute remaining in overtime to give the Garnet the narrow win.
In the first half, LVC jumped out to an early 2-1 lead thanks to goals from Venezia and
Emma Jones. Swat then tied the game at 2-2 with 23:40 left in the first, but three consecutive goals from three different Dutchmen - Kelley,
Kirsten Bannan, and Jones – gave LVC a 5-2 lead with 11:58 left in the opening half. The Garnet answered with four straight tallies to end the half on a 4-0 run and take a 6-5 advantage into halftime.
Jones began the second half with a goal after a Swat yellow card to even the score at 6-6, but the Garnet again answered, this time with a 3-0 run, to take a 9-6 lead. Jones and
Jaclyn Little scored back-to-back to bring the Dutchmen to within one at 9-8, and later, with Swat up 12-10, Jones and Little scored consecutive goals again to tie things up at 12-12.
