How It Happened
Lebanon Valley's offense got back on track and the defense continued its steady performance in the team's 9-5 non-conference victory over Marymount (Va.) at Arnold Field on Saturday afternoon, March 10.
The Flying Dutchmen (3-2) were paced by hat tricks from
Koty Keefer and
Matt Torrence, while the defense was led by
Cam Epple's 16 saves in goal.
Barrett Campbell and
Coleman Wagner, along with Torrence, forced two turnovers each.
LVC struck first when Keefer put a snipe past Marymount goalkeeper Patrick Ruleman three minutes into the first quarter. Keefer doubled the Dutchmen advantage with his second goal of the afternoon at the 5:49 mark and
Matt Torrence added his first marker with 4:52 left in the first to make it 3-0 right out of the gate.
After the Saints (2-5) got on the board late in the first,
Max Warmingham pushed the lead back to three points with a goal at the 12:38 mark of the second quarter.
The visitors cut the deficit to one after converting two consecutive goals midway through the period but Keefer halted the Marymount momentum with his third score of the afternoon with 1:11 left before halftime.
The Saints came out hot in the second half and drew even at 5-5 with back-to-back markers in the third quarter but
Dustin Fisher ended the Marymount run with a nice goal off a nice find from
Nick Mowry at the 6:45 mark after Mowry won a faceoff and
Alex Bushong scooped up the ground ball.
The Dutchmen defense stepped up big time and held the Saints scoreless in the final 21 minutes, while the offense added three goals in the fourth quarter. Torrence twice found twine early in the final period off assists from Keefer and
Kevin Beaver, respectively.
Beaver closed out the game's scoring with an unassisted marker with 6:30 left to play after Torrence forced a turnover and grabbed a ground ball just seconds before.
