How It Happened
As has become a recurring pattern over the past few weeks, Lebanon Valley fell behind in crunch time and made a late run but failed to come up with a much-needed defensive stop before falling to a conference foe. Such was the case in the team's 69-60 loss at Arcadia on Wednesday night, Feb. 7.
The defensive slugfest was led by
Andy Orr's game-high 23 points, 10 rebounds, five blocks, and two steals.
Sam Light was the only other LVC player to reach the double-digit scoring mark with 15 points.
The Flying Dutchmen (14-9, 8-6 MAC Commonwealth) trailed by eight with less than nine minutes remaining but fought back and used a 9-0 run capped by a
Zach Tucker 3-pointer to take a 47-46 lead with 6:43 left to play.
Unfortunately, the advantage wouldn't hold up as the Knights (13-9, 8-5 MAC Commonwealth) scored 12 of the game's next 16 points, with Brandon Thompson's conversion from beyond the arc pushing the home team's lead to seven with 3:13 remaining.
LVC tried to make a late push and thanks to a full-court press that saw
Will Boccanfuso come up with a timely steal on an Arcadia inbound attempt, Orr convert a quick layup while getting fouled, and converting the ensuing free throw, cut the deficit to 61-58 with 44 seconds left.
In final 38 seconds, however, the Knights converted six free throws in a row and the Dutchmen were unable to come up with the timely shots needed to prolong the contest on the other end.
Inside the Numbers
- LVC's 60 points were a single-game season low.
- Both teams struggled in the first half, with each converting just nine field goals in the opening 20 minutes and shooting less than 40 percent.
- Lebanon Valley's recent woes from beyond the arc continued as the team managed just a pair of 3-balls on the night.
- The Dutchmen held a slight 41-37 edge in the rebounding battle.
- Arcadia got the win despite shooting just 64 percent from the foul line (16-of-25).
- The Knights bench outscored LVC's reserves 23-7.
-
Andy Orr had a strong stat line of 23 points, 10 rebounds, five blocks, and two steals. It is his 11th double-double of the season.
-
Sam Light played just 23 minutes before fouling out. He scored 15 points and grabbed six boards.
-
Andrew Eberhart pulled in six rebounds in 11 minutes of action.
- With one apiece, Orr and
Zach Tucker combined for the team's two buckets from 3-point territory.
- Brandon Thompson scored a team-high 14 points for Arcadia.
Playoff Picture
After looking poised to host a semifinal contest in the upcoming MAC Commonwealth Tournament the last few weeks, LVC now finds itself fifth in the league standings. If the season ended today, the Dutchmen would be the road team in the conference tournament's play-in game.
Who's Next?
Things don't get any easier down the stretch. The Dutchmen get six days off before traveling to No. 16 Lycoming next Tuesday night. They'll wrap up the regular season by hosting Messiah on Saturday, Feb. 17.
