How It Happened
Lycoming held on down the stretch to narrowly edge Lebanon Valley 60-50 in MAC Commonwealth women's basketball action on Wednesday night inside Sorrentino Gymnasium. The Dutchmen suffered their first conference loss of the season and fell to 4-5, 2-1 MACC, while the Warriors improved to 6-2, 3-0 MACC.
The visitors were ahead by 11 at 52-41 with 3:59 remaining in the fourth when LVC began to cut into Lyco's advantage.
Emily Mealey, who had a career-high in points this evening, hit a fastbreak-layup on the Dutchmen's next possession to cut the Warriors' advantage to single digits at 52-43. Then, with 2:52 left,
Megan Bisco hit a jumper to make it a seven-point game at 52-45. Alex Jones then made a layup, but later, with 59 ticks left, Mealey knocked down a huge 3-pointer off an assist from
Anne Lehr to bring LVC to within six at 54-48. That, however, would be as close as the Dutchmen would get, as Lyco made enough free throws (6-for-10) down the stretch to hold on for the 60-50 win.
The contest was close in the early going after Lehr made a jumper with 4:58 left in the opening quarter to make it a 10-8 game in favor of the visitors. Lyco then scored four straight points to make it a six-point lead with 3:11 remaining, but Mealey didn't allow the Warriors to end the quarter on a big spurt when she hit a jumper with 2:50 left, and the Dutchmen went into the second quarter down by just four at 14-10.
In the second, Lyco extended their lead thanks to a 9-0 run that spanned almost six minutes for the 25-10 advantage. The Warriors clamped down on defense in the second quarter and held the double-digit lead for the quarter's entirety and took a 31-17 advantage into halftime.
Early on in the third quarter, LVC cut Lyco's lead to single-digits when Lehr capped an 8-4 run by the Dutchmen with a layup, making it a 35-26 game. For nearly the rest of the quarter, the visitors held on to their double-digit advantage until
Veronica Venezia hit a layup from
Molly Galvin with 49 seconds left, bringing the home team to within nine at 42-33, but Akilah McFadden made a layup with 17 seconds remaining to put the Warriors back up by double-digits at 44-33 heading into fourth-quarter action.
