How It Happened
Led by
Chris Anderson's triple-double, Lebanon Valley erased a 19-point second-half deficit to force overtime where the Dutchmen dominated Bryn Athyn en route to a 93-81 victory on Friday night in the 2018 Rinso Marquette Men's Basketball Tournament. LVC improved to 2-1, while the Lions dropped to 0-1.
With 4:23 remaining in the extra period,
Mason Green knocked down back-to-back free throws that sparked a critical run for the Dutchmen. At 3:35,
Jeremy Deihm made a layup, and after a missed layup from Bryn Athyn,
Jordan Abdo rolled down the floor and drilled a triple to make pad LVC's lead at 84-77 with 2:56 left. Three consecutive free throws followed for the Dutchmen, included two from
Zach Tucker, to extend the lead to 10 at 87-77 with 1:47 left. The Lions answered with two free throws at 1:40, but Abdo hit a layup with 1:18 left to put LVC back on top at 89-79 to put the game out of reach, as the Dutchmen held on comfortably in overtime for the thrilling comeback-victory.
At the 13:13 mark of the second half, LVC found themselves down by 19 at 58-39. With the outcome apparently imminent, the Dutchmen cut the deficit to 12 after Tucker nailed a 3-pointer at 11:47 to make it a 59-47 contest. From there, LVC continued to chip away and at 7:14, the Dutchmen were finally within single digits of the Lions at 69-60 after Tucker's good jumper, and that's where things started to get interesting. With the crowd back in it,
Derreck Orr Jr. knocked down a pair from the charity stripe, and after a missed jumper by the visitors, Green was fouled and hit two more free throws, bringing LVC to within five at 69-64 with 5:21 remaining.
At 4:57, Orr hit a triple to cut the deficit to two, and later, with the Dutchmen still down by two at 71-69 with 2:53 to go, Green nailed a pair of free throws to draw even with the Lions at 71-71. Bryn Athyn went down the floor and scored on a fastbreak layup by Larry Stevenson III, but Deihm tied it up again on the ensuing play with a layup. After Rahim Washington missed a layup, Abdo put LVC on top for the first time in game with a jumper at 1:03. On the Lions' next possession, Washington hit a layup, sending the game into overtime.
Bryn Athyn jumped out to a quick 8-4 lead with 16:55 left in the first half, but the Dutchmen responded with a 7-4 spurt to come to within one after Abdo's triple at 14:42 made it a one-point contest. The Lions, who were lethal from beyond the arc in the first, used hot shooting to distance themselves by a 29-18 margin from the Dutchmen with 6:18 left after Anthony Burr's trey. Later, Washington's 3-pointer increased the visitor's advantage to 14 with 3:48 remaining, but LVC cut it back to single digits at 38-29 after Abdo's layup. In the final 3:48, Bryn Athyn went back up by 13 and took a 43-30 lead heading into the second half. The Lions held a steady lead in the early going of the second until LVC began to chip away. The Dutchmen eventually tied it and then outscored the Lions 18-6 in overtime to come away with the thrilling win to advance to the 2018 Rinso Marquette Championship game.
