Volleyball Falls To Green Terror in ECAC Semi’s

McDaniel College 3, Lebanon Valley 1

How It Happened

RADNOR, Pa. – Lebanon Valley was downed by McDaniel 3-1 (17-25, 25-11, 20-25, 14-25) in the semifinal round of the 2018 DIII ECAC Volleyball Championship Tournament at Cabrini University. The Flying Dutchmen ended their season with a 19-13 overall record, while the Green Terror moved on to the championship match where they defeated by NYU 3-0.

Both teams came out strong in the first set. The Dutchmen and the Green Terror went back and forth until the score was tied at 8-8. McDaniel went on a three point run, which was ended by a service ace, but gained the momentum back and went on a five-point run creating a seven-point lead (16-9). The Dutchmen gained a couple more points, but it wasn't enough as the Green Terror went on another run making it 24-14 and set point. McDaniel won the first set on a kill by Abigail Hernandez 25-17.

From the start, it looked as though McDaniel was going to take the second set as well. The Green Terror started off with a strong lead of 5-1. LVC, however, came back with a point run of their own and gained the lead 6-5. It stayed neck-and-neck until the Dutchmen and went on a 14-point run with Kaitlyn Reed behind the line. Lebanon Valley hit .296 as a team, their best set of the match, and McDaniel hit .071 as a team, their worst set of the match. The Dutchmen took the second set 25-11.

If each set could have a theme, point runs would be the theme of set three. Lebanon Valley took the lead with two service aces from Jayna Class and an attack error from McDaniel. The Dutchmen were up 4-1. The Green Terror come back with two aces and a kill of their own and take the lead 5-4, and the run was ended by a service error. Lebanon Valley kept the set alive and with three errors coming from the Green Terror, the Dutchmen were back in the mix and tied it at 12-12. LVC kept the hope alive and battled McDaniel, making a 19-19 tie. With three kills and an ace at the end of the set, the Green Terror won 25-20 and went up two sets to one.

The Dutchmen took an early lead in the fourth in what would be the final set. McDaniel had three errors in a row, giving Lebanon Valley a 5-2 lead. The back-and-forth action continued for a few points, but McDaniel went on to have four separate point runs, and LVC couldn't combat it. McDaniel eventually went on to take the fourth set 25-14 to win the match 3-1.
