How It Happened
GRANTHAM, Pa. – Lebanon Valley's women's soccer team was blanked by No. 3 Messiah by a 3-0 margin on Wednesday night, Oct. 31 in the 2018 MAC Commonwealth Semifinals. The Dutchmen wrapped up their season with an 8-7-2 mark, while the Falcons improved to 16-1-1 and advanced to Saturday's conference championship match.
In 90 minutes of action, LVC played solid defense for about 83 of them, but the Falcons capitalized on good scoring chances and scored all three of their goals in the first 7:30 of action. Exactly one minute into action, Brooke Firestone netted her 16th goal of the season to give Messiah a very early lead. Just 4:24 later, Firestone scored her second of the night, and just 2:06 later, Julia Kyne netted her seventh of the season moments after a Falcons' corner kick.
From there, the Dutchmen's defense locked down and played well throughout the remainder of the match, but unfortunately, the damage was already done and Messiah never allowed an LVC comeback attempt. In the second half, the Dutchmen generated a corner kick, and later
Lea Dungan let off a header shot, but it was blocked. LVC's lone shot on goal came in the 80th minute, but
Brianna Mumma's shot was saved by Lydia Ewing and the Dutchmen eventually fell by a 3-0 score.
Inside the Numbers
-
Serena Donmoyer made eight saves in net for LVC.
- The Dutchmen were outshot 20-2 and 11-1 in shots on goal.
- The Falcons led in corner kicks at 7-2.
- Firestone ended with four shots on goal, while Kyne and Lilly Shover added two each.
Goodbye, 2018
Tonight's match marks the end of LVC's 2018 season. The end of the regular season proved to be the most exciting, and perhaps nerve-wracking part of the season. Needing a win and a Stevenson loss on the final day of regular-season action, the Dutchmen got just that and went on to defeat Widener to advance to the conference semifinals.
