How It Happened
Lebanon Valley struggled in a number of key statistical categories in a 74-69 loss at Messiah on Wednesday night, Jan. 17.
The Flying Dutchmen (11-6, 5-3 MAC Commonwealth) were outrebounded, surrendered 25 points off turnovers to the Falcons (10-6, 5-3 MAC Commonwealth), and connected on just three field goals from beyond the arc in the defeat.
Sam Light scored a game-high 21 points,
Ricky Bugg netted 14, and
Will Boccanfuso was the third LVC player to reach the double-digit scoring mark with 10 tallies.
The Dutchmen never led and fell behind by a double-digit margin for the first time when Messiah's Matt Goglowski finished off an old-fashioned 3-point play with 8:37 remaining in the first half. The Falcons' advantage held when they took a 39-27 advantage into the break.
LVC chipped away at the deficit early in the second half and drew to within six points at 45-39 when Light knocked down a jumper with 15:30 left to play.
The turning point came when the Falcons responded with a 9-2 run that put them back on top by 13 with 11:18 remaining. The Dutchmen cut the deficit to a more manageable 65-57 with 3:09 left when Light hit a triple but turnovers and missed shots in crunch time prohibited the visitors from putting together a legitimate comeback attempt.
