How It Happened
It was one of those nights where things snowballed before getting away from Lebanon Valley in the team's 87-54 loss to league-leading Lycoming at Sorrentino Gymnasium in the regular-season finale on Tuesday night, Feb. 14.
A
Sam Light jumper put the Flying Dutchmen (15-10, 9-7 MAC Commonwealth) out in front 19-18 with 11:12 remaining in the first half. From there, the team managed just four points and one field goal, an
Andy Orr layup at the 3:26 mark, before intermission.
The Warriors (20-4, 12-3 MAC Commonwealth) closed out the first half on a game-changing 25-4 run and never looked back, as Lyco held the Dutchmen to just four points over a span of nearly 13 minutes that bridged the first and second halves.
LVC showed signs of life early in the second half when a Light layup and three-ball on back-to-back possessions preceded him finding
Marquis Davis for a fastbreak bucket that cut the deficit to a more realistic 15 points less than four minutes after the break.
The visitors had an answer, however, and scored the game's next six points to push the advantage back to 21 with 15:59 left to play. Lycoming increased the lead to 30-plus for the first time when TJ Duckett knocked down a triple with 8:40 remaining and rode that momentum to victory.
Inside the Numbers
- It was tough sledding for LVC, as the team shot just 33 percent from the field. That number is down from its nearly 47 percent average entering Tuesday's contest.
- The Dutchmen also struggled from beyond the arc, managing just five triples on 22 percent shooting from distance.
- Lycoming was able to work around some early foul trouble by calling on its bench and the reserves rewarded the coaching staff with 46 points.
- The Warriors outrebounded Lebanon Valley 49-33.
- Lyco was efficient and shot 49.3 percent from the floor, including 50 percent (10-20) from three-point land.
-
Sam Light was LVC's leading scorer with 12 points, while
Andy Orr netted nine on 4-5 shooting from the field.
-
Will Boccanfuso grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for the Dutchmen, while Orr added six of his own.
-
Marquis Davis added a game-high three steals to go along with his seven points.
-
Chris Anderson and
Morgon Keiser led the way off the bench, with Anderson netting seven markers and Keiser adding four.
- TJ Duckett scored a game-high 15 points off the bench for the Warriors, while Nyk King recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.
- Tuesday's margin of defeat was LVC's largest of the season.
Senior Day
Prior to Tuesday's contest, Lebanon Valley honored its two men's basketball seniors in manager Tim Blauch and two-year captain
Travis Conrad. Blauch has served as team manager for four years and has amassed an impressive 3.95 cumulative GPA. Conrad has scored more than 700 points during his four-year career. He recently set a pair of single-game program records when he finished a perfect 8-of-8 from the field and 7-for-7 from beyond the arc in a win at Arcadia last month, before scoring a career-high 33 points against Hood two weeks ago. He was named the MAC Commonwealth Player of the Week earlier this season and he ranks fifth all-time in program history with 168 career three-pointers made.
Playoff Picture
Despite the loss, LVC clinched a berth in next week's MAC Commonwealth Championship Tournament thanks to a Messiah loss on Tuesday night. All five participating teams are set, with Lycoming, Alvernia, Albright, Widener, and the Dutchmen set to compete for the league title. Lebanon Valley is idle on Saturday, while the remaining four teams finish off their regular seasons that afternoon. Depending on how things shake out, LVC could finish as high as third, or as low as fifth, in the final standings.
Who's Next?
LVC's regular season is complete. Results from around the MAC Commonwealth on Saturday afternoon will determine the team's first opponent in the conference's upcoming postseason tournament.
