How It Happened
For the second time this season, Lebanon Valley was unable to close out a close game down the stretch. The Flying Dutchmen (6-2, 2-1 MAC Commonwealth) suffered their first conference loss of the season when they dropped an 82-80 decision at Stevenson on Wednesday night, Dec. 6.
LVC led by as many as 16 points in the first half and by as much as 11 in the second but failed to convert when needed most. The Mustangs (5-3, 1-2 MAC Commonwealth) missed just one free throw on the night; a statistic that proved the difference in sealing the victory in crunch time.
The Dutchmen watched a 10–point advantage evaporate in the closing minutes but still had a chance to stifle Stevenson's comeback attempt by getting a stop in the final minute. Instead, Jaylin Johnson buried a contested 3-pointer as the shot clock wound down with 30 seconds left to put the home team ahead 78-76. It put SU out in front for the first time since leading 2-0 in the opening moments.
Lebanon Valley had a chance to pull even following a Mustang foul on the ensuing possession but the front end of a one-and-one missed the mark, as did an attempted put back following an offensive rebound by
Andy Orr. The visitors tried to extend the game by fouling but Stevenson went a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe with the game on the line to finish off the comeback win.
The Mustangs' hero-ball heroics spoiled strong nights by Orr and
Sam Light. The big man finished with a game-high 24 points and nine rebounds, while his running mate netted 22 and pulled in eight boards. The pair combined for 17 of the team's 31 rebounds and were the only Dutchmen to reach the double-digit scoring mark.
