How It Happened
In the team's 2017 season finale, Lebanon Valley turned in an impressive effort before falling to a 15-win Gwynedd Mercy team by a 3-1 decision at Arnold Field on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 28.

The Flying Dutchmen defense came to play, as the unit racked up 16 total saves on the day. Goalkeeper Tori ByDeLey made 12 of those stops, while Alida Steenkamer, Rachel Gorman, and Tasia Dennis combined for four defensive saves.

The Griffins' most dangerous weapon, Melissa Russo, made her mark right off the bat when she netted her 32nd goal of the season off an assist from Shannon Carroll following a penalty-corner insertion just 2:19 into the contest.

LVC (6-12) responded with an aggressive approach on offense and was rewarded when Isabella Vulopas and Cecile Kat teamed up to net the equalizer little more than eight minutes later. Kat controlled the ball in the circle with numerous Gwynedd Mercy defenders surrounding her before squeezing it to Vulopas who pushed her attempt into the left side of the cage to draw the Dutchmen even at the 24:26 mark.

The Dutchmen narrowly missed out on a goal just before halftime when Kat's last-second attempt skirted by to the right of the goal and out of bounds. GMU (15-3) made the miss hurt when Brianna O'Connell gathered a long pass from Erika Cimino, spun around and whipped her shot into the right side of the goal to give the visitors a 2-1 lead 5:22 into the second half.

Russo gave the Griffins all the insurance they would need when she turned another penalty-corner opportunity into points. With 18:28 remaining, she inserted the corner to Carroll who fired a shot that was deflected by Russo into the back of the cage.
