How It Happened
Lebanon Valley edged out Widener in its first home match of the season by a 3-2 score in each team's MAC Commonwealth opener on Wednesday night. The Dutchmen improved to 2-3, 1-0 MAC Commonwealth, while the Pride slipped to 2-3, 0-1 MAC Commonwealth.
With the victory, head coach Wayne Perry earned his 600th win as the head coach of LVC. Perry joins elite company and is now just one of 12 coaches in Division III history to accumulate 600 or more victories.
With the sets knotted at 2-2, the fifth and deciding set was an exciting affair. The squads traded off points in the early going as the set was tied at 3-3 before a
Jess Attieh kill and Widener attack error gave the Dutchmen a 5-3 advantage. With LVC still up at 6-4, the Dutchmen rattled off four in a row to make it a 9-4 set. The Pride didn't go quietly, however, scoring three consecutive points later in the set to come to within two at 10-8.
Following that,
Greta Weidemoyer notched two straight kills to make it 12-8 and LVC was able to hold on and take the fifth set at 15-10 to secure the thrilling win.
Inside the Numbers
- Weidemoyer led the way in kills with 16, while Attieh finished with 10 and
Nina Mentzer chipped in seven. Weidemoyer also paced the Dutchmen with 25 assists and
Erin Koons added 18 more.
- Attieh and Menzter had two solo blocks apiece.
- Three Dutchmen were in double digits in digs including
Melanie Phifer (18), Weidemoyer (13), and
Morgan Webb (10). Weidemoyer added four service aces for LVC.
- The Dutchmen led in total team kills at 51-48.
- For Widener, Janie Kalinock led in kills with 13 and Nicole Dorman registered 10.
- Dorman also led in service aces (four) and solo blocks (two).
What's Next?
LVC hosts the Dutchmen Quad this weekend inside Sorrentino Gymnasium. The two-day event begins Friday night with more matches happening Saturday. The other teams include Franklin & Marshall, Rowan, and Penn St.- Harrisburg.
