LANCASTER, Pa. – A pair of freshmen in
Kate Mowrey and
Garrett Santis helped lead Lebanon Valley to women's and men's team titles at Lancaster Bible's Homecoming Invitational on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 22.
Mowrey won the women's individual championship, finishing the 6k race in 25:11, while fellow Flying Dutchman
Hannah Kurek earned the runner-up spot thanks to her time of 25:47.
Rebecca Sitler was the third LVC runner to earn a top-five finish as she crossed the line in 26:07, good enough for fourth overall.
Lauren Decker,
Brittany Rees, and
Mackenzie Lausch were top-10 finishers, coming home in tandem in seventh, eighth, and ninth place, respectively. All three runners completed the course in less than 27 minutes.
Samantha Gates,
Brittney Kettinger, and
Katrina Zicot kept pace with each other and finished 13th, 14th, and 15th, respectively, while
Janessa Cruz (18th) was the 10th Lebanon Valley runner to earn a top-20 finish.
"This was a great effort even with resting two of our best runners in
Sarah Grow and
Hannah Kramlik," said LVC head coach
James O'Brien '07, M'16. "Kate (Mowrey) made the win look easy with a solid time on a slow course and
Hannah Kurek was awesome in finishing second. Becca (Sitler) gave us a great effort and nearly snagged us the top three places.
Lauren Decker,
Brittany Rees, and Kenzie Lausch provided a strong pack to secure the win."
The women took home the team trophy with a total score of 20, besting the runners-up from McDaniel by more than 60 points.
On the men's side, Santis completed the 8k course in 27:59, less than 30 seconds behind Jim Heilman, the race winner from McDaniel. His runner-up finish set the tone for the Dutchmen as a whole with
Noah Brady,
Ibsen Powers, and
Nick Scullin crossing the line in third, fourth, and fifth place, respectively.
Kyle Munro (seventh) was the fifth Lebanon Valley runner to earn a top-10 finish.
Terrence Habiyaremye and
Chad Bomgardner had solid showings in 16th and 17th place, respectively, while
Harrison Kelly earned himself a top-20 finish.
Stephen Shelly and
Noah Baxter just missed out on top-20 finishes, coming home back-to-back in 21st and 22nd, and
Michael Gang (24th) and
Ben Tanner (29th) made it 11 Dutchmen to finish inside the top 30.
"Pack running paved the way for our win with Garrett (Santis) pulling away late to finish second overall," said O'Brien about his men's victory. "
Noah Brady,
Ibsen Powers, and
Nick Scullin teamed up for spots 3-4-5 and Kyle (Munro) wasn't far behind in seventh. We ran well for this time of the year on tired legs."
The Dutchmen earned the team championship with a total score of 21. McDaniel earned a runner-up finish with a score of 55.
LVC is next in action on Saturday morning, Oct. 1 when the team takes part in the Dickinson Long/Short Invitational at Big Spring High School in Newville, Pa.
