How It Happened
Lebanon Valley men's soccer team's historic and memorable season will feature one more game. The Dutchmen scored two goals in the second half to complete the comeback against William Paterson in the 2016 ECAC DIII Men's Soccer Tournament Semifinal match. LVC, who will now play in its first-ever ECAC Championship match, upped its number of wins on the season to 17, its most ever in one season, while the Pioneers' season ended at 9-9-3.
With William Paterson ahead 1-0 in the 69th minute,
Gabe Stasyszyn received a hard pass in the box from
Alex Detweiler and Stasyszyn kicked one past the Pioneers' Kyle Quigley to the game at 1-1.
Then, with the thought of overtime buzzing throughout Herbert Field,
Matt Prince broke free near the box and shot a ball that was saved, however the rebound went right to
Tyler Skye who punched it home to give the Dutchmen a 2-1 advantage in thrilling fashion. The Pioneers' didn't have many chances in the final four-plus minutes and LVC hung on for the incredible 2-1 come-from-behind win.
Each team saw several good scoring chances in the opening half, but William Paterson struck first in the 12th minute when Darwin Cruz scored after a corner kick into the box came right to him and he snuck a ball past the Dutchmen and into the net. The lone goal, however, wasn't enough as LVC was able to score twice in the second to edge out the Pioneers.
Inside the Numbers
- The Dutchmen held the edge in shots (18-12) and shots on goal at seven to four.
-
Cam Avery earned his 15th win of the season, improving upon LVC's all-time record for wins in a season while making three stops.
- The Pioneers led in corner kicks at 6-4.
ECAC Championship Set for Tomorrow
LVC faces Drew University, who defeated Penn State Harrisburg 1-0 in OT earlier today, tomorrow in the ECAC Championship match at 12 p.m. at Herbert Field. Because Drew is the higher seed, the Rangers will be the home team. (The Dutchmen will wear white, and Drew will wear dark blue).
