How It Happened
Lebanon Valley's season came to an end when the team dropped a five-set heartbreaker to Marymount (Va.) at Sorrentino Gymnasium on Saturday night, Nov. 12 in the quarterfinal round of the ECAC Division III Championship Tournament.
After dropping the opening two sets, the Flying Dutchmen charged back to take the third and fourth sets before falling by the slimmest of margins in the deciding game.
Allison Cable twice provided sparks in the third set as LVC put together impressive runs during her service sessions, including three points in a row late in the game that culminated when
Greta Weidemoyer's kill put the Dutchmen ahead 22-14.
Amanda Sides sealed the victory with a set-ending kill off a Weidemoyer assist.
Set four proved tighter down the stretch and this time it was
Morgan Webb whose service run keyed Lebanon Valley to victory. The Dutchmen racked three consecutive points capped by her ace to go ahead 23-19 late in the game. A service error by the Saints' Caroline Hanson sent the match to a fifth and deciding set.
LVC went ahead 4-2 in the early going of the final game but Marymount reeled off five straight points to take a 7-4 lead. The Dutchmen fought back and took an 11-10 lead thanks to a Mallory Mitchell attack error but it wasn't enough as the Saints were able to secure five of the game's final seven points and escape with the narrowest of wins.
Marymount joins Swarthmore, Emerson, and NYU as teams to advance to the semifinal round of the ECAC Division III Championship Tournament, to be held at Sorrentino Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 13.
