GRANTHAM, Pa. –
Nick Scullin,
Noah Brady, and
Hannah Kurek secured Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) All-Conference honors at the 2016 MAC Championship meet held at Messiah on Saturday morning, Oct. 29.
Scullin's eighth-place finish combined with Brady coming home 20th led the men's team to a sixth-place team finish out of the 16 competing teams from the league. Scullin's time of 27:10.9 was good enough to earn him first-team all-conference honors, while Brady's effort of 27:40.7 secured all-conference second-team recognition.
Chad Bomgardner's time of 28:04.0 was good enough for 29th-place, while
Ibsen Powers (38th) and
Garrett Santis (40th) each earned top-40 finishes to complete the Flying Dutchmen scoring group.
Kyle Munro (55th),
Stephen Chappell (57th), and
Harrison Kelly (59th) stayed tight to pick up top-60 finishes, while
Terrence Habiyaremye,
Ian Brown,
Stephen Shelly, and
Michael Dworzak rounded out the LVC runners.
"We are slightly disappointed by our sixth-place finish only because we felt that we competed very well on this course," said LVC head coach
James O'Brien '07, M'16. "Nick (Scullin) caught fire in October which translated into a big effort from him today. I'm incredibly happy for Noah (Brady) to work his way into the top 20 as he is one of the toughest runners I know. Chad (Bomgardner), Ibsen (Powers) and Garrett (Santis) all finished close together to give us a solid scoring contingency. We return most of our team for next year and the conference will be very tight."
Widener won the 2016 MAC Championship behind strong outings from the overall individual champion Ernie Pitone (25:31.8) and runner-up Will McDermott (26:09.1).
Kurek's time of 24:22.9 secured her a 15th-place finish and helped lead the Dutchmen to their targeted fourth-place team finish out of the 16 competing MAC schools. It also earned her all-conference second-team recognition.
Kate Mowrey capped an impressive freshman campaign by just missing out on all-conference honors in 23rd with a time of 24:53.2.
Lauren Decker wasn't far off the pace in 27th, running a 25:14.9, while
Hannah Kramlik and
Brittany Rees nearly completed LVC's scoring bunch, crossing the finish line nearly simultaneously in 29th and 30th, respectively.
Rebecca Sitler (48th) and
Mackenzie Lausch (50th) earned top-50 finishes, while
Brittney Kettinger,
Samantha Gates,
Alexa Muffly,
Jeanette Tropp, and
Katrina Zicot rounded out the LVC competitors.
"Our target was fourth coming in and it feels satisfying to achieve our mark," said O'Brien about the performance of his women's squad. "We ran really tough as a unit and had our entire top seven in the top 50. Tall Hannah (Kurek) was brilliant today with Kate (Mowrey) narrowly missing all-conference status. Lauren (Decker),
Hannah Kramlik and Brittany (Rees) all found each other late in the race which made for an exciting finish. This was a great result from a young team that will return eight of our top nine along with
Sarah Grow next fall."
DeSales' Veronica Wheeler won the 2016 Individual MAC Championship with a time of 22:21.8, leading the Bulldogs to the team title in the process.
