OBERLIN, Ohio – Lebanon Valley's men's and women's cross country teams turned in strong showings at Oberlin's Inter-Regional Rumbe on Saturday morning, Oct. 15. The meet is the largest the programs will compete in this fall.
Nick Scullin led the way for the men, finishing 50th out of the 278 competing runners thanks to completing the 8k race in 25:58.7. The Flying Dutchmen finished 15th overall out of 32 total teams at the event.
Chad Bomgardner was the next-highest finishing Dutchman, as his time of 26:12.2 was good enough to earn him 60th place. In his first trip to Oberlin,
Garrett Santis (100th) was the third LVC runner to place in the top 100 thanks to a time of 26:44.3.
Ibsen Powers wasn't far behind in 111 place, while
Noah Brady rounded out Lebanon Valley's top five with a 132nd-place finish.
Kyle Munro (146th),
Stephen Chappell (179th), and
Ian Brown (197th) each earned top-200 finishes, while
Stephen Shelly just missed out on one of his own, coming home 204th.
"We worked in great subsets, with
Nick Scullin and
Chad Bomgardner;
Garrett Santis and
Ibsen Powers; and
Noah Brady and
Kyle Munro all working together," said LVC head coach James O'Brien '07. "This was our first 8k on a fast course all year and I feel we handled it quite well with seasonal PRs across the board.
"Our team finish is a great showing and I feel that we have the pieces to put out an even better team performance in two weeks at MACs," he continued. "From our top group, I feel that Nick and Garrett both really stepped up their game with Chad, Ibsen, and Noah providing good, reliable performances. I'm excited for what is to come."
Lauren Decker was outstanding for the women, as her time of 23:23.9 earned her an LVC-best 70th-place finish out of 255 total runners.
Kate Mowrey's stout freshman campaign continued as she followed closely behind Decker, posting a 74th-place finish with a time of 23:33.6. As a team, the Dutchmen came home 16th out of 29 competing programs.
Hannah Kurek was the third Lebanon Valley runner to secure a top-100 finish, as her time of 23:42.2 wrapped up 84th overall.
Hannah Kramlik just missed out on the top 100. She crossed the finish line in 24:09.0, good enough to earn her 107th.
Brittany Rees rounded out the team's top-five finishers in 125th place.
Mackenzie Lausch came home in 152nd and
Rebecca Sitler and
Samantha Gates crossed the line back-to-back in 183rd and 184th, respectively.
Brittney Kettinger (201st) just missed out on a top-200 finish and Jeannette Tropp wrapped things up for the Dutchmen in 237th.
"We only had three varsity returners compete in this race last year and it was great to see a primarily new and young group rise to the challenge of competing in such a large event," said O'Brien. Our finish at a meet of this magnitude bodes well for our upcoming postseason. Our 58 second 1-5 spread is something that we've been working towards throughout the season.
"
Lauren Decker ran the race of her career, almost notching a full-minute PR, with
Kate Mowrey right in tow, both running fantastic times," continued O'Brien. "
Hannah Kurek moved up the entire race as our solid third with Hannak Kramlik and
Brittany Rees rounding out our scoring contingency with great races.
Mackenzie Lausch also broke the 25-minute barrier for the first time in her career."
Oberlin took home the women's varsity team championship, while Carnegie Mellon won the team title on the men's side.
LVC's men's and women's teams are next in action this Friday evening, Oct. 21, when the program hosts the LVC Last Chance Run Fast Invitational at Union Canal Tunnel Park.
