Game 1A wild seventh inning, which saw Lebanon Valley lead to start, trail at the midway point, but most importantly lead when all was said and done, highlighted the Flying Dutchmen's 10-9 come-from-behind victory over Wilkes in game one of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.
LVC (3-8) led 5-3 with the Lady Colonels (4-5) coming to bat in the top of the seventh. The Wilkes' bats got hot to the tune of six hits, including four doubles, and six runs in the stanza and the visitors looked to have completed the late comeback with the Dutchmen faced with a four-run deficit and down to their final three outs.
But Lebanon Valley was just getting started.
Angela Harris singled,
Elaine Gross walked,
Kim Ortiz-Marrero doubled,
Tessa Deardorff poked one through the left side,
Cheyanne Brown beat out a ground ball to second base,
Sammy Bost worked a base on balls, and LVC chased Wilkes' starter Nicole Cumbo from the game all before the Lady Colonels recorded the first out of the inning. With two outs and her team trailing 9-8,
Haley Christensen worked a full count, bases-loaded walk to plate Brown and tie the score. Harris followed it up with a ground ball to shortstop, hustled down the first base line, and forced a rushed throw that the first baseman couldn't corral to give the Dutchmen a crazy, hard-fought walk-off win in the opener.
Game 2What a difference a game makes. After watching their lead disintegrate and reappear in the last inning of game one, the Dutchmen made their 9-1, five-inning victory over Wilkes in the second contest look easy.
LVC (4-8) took advantage of an outfield error in the bottom of the first as
Sammy Bost plated on the play to put the home team ahead 1-0 after one. Another outfield error in the second allowed
Jasmine Dutton to score the game's second unearned run.
The Dutchmen offense really got going in the fourth. Bost's two-run, RBI double to right field got the scoring started and
Angela Harris' single drove in two more for Lebanon Valley. By the time the stanza came to an end,
Jordyn Miller crossed the plate thanks to the third Lady Colonel error of the game and
Alissa Robinson's RBI single made it 9-0 LVC.
Wilkes (4-6) avoided the shutout by scoring the team's lone run in the top of the fifth but it wasn't enough to dampen
Haley Christensen's stellar effort inside the circle or postpone the nightcap's early conclusion.
Inside the Circle-
Haley Neff got the start in the opener and went 6.0 innings, allowing eight hits and six earned runs, half of which came in the final stanza.
-
Haley Christensen allowed two runs on two hits and a walk in closing out game one but earned the win thanks to LVC's comeback efforts. She responded in a big way in the finale, picking up her second victory of the day and allowing just one run, four hits, and a walk in addition to striking out three batters.
At the Plate-
Cheyanne Brown was perfect from the dish in the opener, going 5-for-5 with a double and two runs scored.
-
Tessa Deardorff was 3-for-4 in game one from the leadoff spot with an RBI and a run scored.
-
Sammy Bost and
Kim Ortiz-Marrero each drove in a game-high three runs in the first game. Bost also added a triple, walked three times, and scored twice while Ortiz-Marrero notched a triple, a double, and plated once.
- Bost and
Elaine Gross each went 2-for-3 in the nightcap with Bost doubling twice, scoring twice, and driving in two runs. Gross scored twice and
Angela Harris recorded two RBI.
- The Dutchmen and the Lady Colonels each racked up six extra-base hits across two games.
Around the Diamond- After stroking four base knocks on the day,
Tessa Deardorff is now just four hits shy of breaking the program record for most hits in a career held by her sister and current assistant coach
Katie Deardorff.
-
Liz Bauer saw the most work in the field for LVC in game one with four putouts at second base.
Sammy Bost and
Angela Harris each recorded two in the outfield in the nightcap.
-
Cheyanne Brown had the lone stolen base in the opener.
Kim Ortiz-Marrero swiped the only bag of game two.
