Game 1Emily Johnson and
Jasmine Dutton's home runs provided the offense for Lebanon Valley as the Flying Dutchmen defeated Albright 8-3 in their 2015 home and Commonwealth Conference opener on Tuesday afternoon.
Johnson's long ball to left field was her second of the season and scored
Tessa Deardorff and
Sammy Bost to give LVC (2-7, 1-0 CC) a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
The Lions (7-2, 0-1 CC) answered back in the top of the second when Morgan Cullen homered to left and drove in Sera Stull in the process.
Bost's triple to down the right field line plated Deardorff for the second time and the speedy sophomore took advantage of an errant throw, scoring on the play to up the Dutchmen lead to 5-2 in the fifth. Lebanon Valley wasn't done, however, as Dutton launched her first career homer, a three-run shot, over the left field fence and drove in
Angela Harris and
Kim Ortiz-Marrero before the end of the stanza to up the advantage to a comfortable 8-2.
Albright added a run in the sixth but that's as close as the visitors would get as starter
Haley Neff stranded two Lion runners in the seventh to give LVC its second win of the young season.
Game 2Lebanon Valley's
Haley Christensen and Albright's Riley Gerenda were locked in a pitchers' duel when Sammi O'Connor's two-run home run changed the complexion of a tight contest. O'Connor's shot proved the difference in the Lions' 2-0 victory in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader.
The Dutchmen (2-8, 1-1 CC) had a chance to make some noise in the early going when
Jordyn Miller and
Jasmine Dutton led off the bottom of the second with back-to-back singles.
Angela Harris moved them along with a sac bunt in the team's next at bat but LVC failed to capitalize, stranding the runners in scoring position.
O'Connor grooved a two-out homer over the right field fence in the fourth, driving in Brianne Long on the play to give the Lions (8-2, 1-1 CC) a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Lebanon Valley left two more on base in the bottom of the fourth but the team managed just one hit and two base runners in the game's final three innings and the rally the Dutchmen needed to get back into it never materialized.
