Alex Detweiler's goal 3:49 into overtime gave Lebanon Valley a win over Whitman in their season opener Friday night at Christopher Newport University.
Detweiler's one-touch flick off
Joe Gallagher's set piece gave the Dutchmen (1-0) the win as
Kyle Miller worked a four-save shutout for his first career win in goal.
LVC dominated the game offensively, leading 15-6 on shots, but it was Whitman (0-1) who nearly took the lead in regulation but had a second-half goal called back on offsides. The Dutchmen spread the offense around, with Detweiler,
Connor McDonald,
Tyler Skye, and
Austin Freeman each getting off a pair of shots.
The winner didn't take long with an early foul leading to a dangerous spot for Gallagher. He served it in for Detweiler, who deftly flicked it into the left side of goal for the win.
Whitman's Niko Contos made nine saves in the losing effort. Miller (1-0) had a pair of saves in either half.
LVC will take on Randolph-Macon Saturday evening on the second day of the CNU tournament.
