Dutchmen Dominate Early, Take Care of Catholic

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley jumped out to a sizable early lead and never looked back en route to a convincing 76-54 victory over Catholic at Sorrentino Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

Peyton Carper scored a team-high 16 points, Bridget Rothert netted 12, and Taylor Umbrell added 11.  Rothert, Umbrell, Lauren Derby, and Kaitlyn Van Tash each pulled in a game-high eight rebounds.  As a team, the Flying Dutchmen (8-2) finished with a commanding 48-25 rebounding advantage over the visitors.

The Cardinals (5-4) netted the game's opening three points but failed to score again until the 13:59 mark of the first half.  LVC used a decisive 17-3 run over the opening 6:30 to put it out of reach early before grabbing the team's largest lead of the half at 24 following a Rothert jumper from beyond the arc with 2:23 remaining before the break.

Five-straight points from Van Tash, including an old-fashioned three-point play, put the Dutchmen ahead by 57-30 with 11:49 left to play while an Alyssa Cirucci three-ball gave Lebanon Valley its largest advantage of the night at 28 with 7:21 remaining.

The Cardinals cut the deficit to less than 20 points for the first time in the second half with 4:52 left in regulation but Catholic's attempt to climb back into it proved far too little too late.

The Dutchmen outshot the visitors from the field 42.1 percent to 27.8 percent and 46.9 percent to 24.1 percent in the first half alone.  After failing to net a single point for over six minutes in the early going, the Cardinals went scoreless for nearly four more minutes midway through the opening half.  It took Catholic over 14 minutes to reach double figures.

Rothert was her usual do-it-all self.  In addition to her scoring and rebounding totals, she dished out a game-best five assists, swiped three steals, and recorded the contest's only block; an emphatic rejection of an attempted layup shortly after the break.  Carper added six boards and four assists while Van Tash and Lexie Lantz scored nine points apiece.

Every Dutchmen that suited up Wednesday night was good for at least three points and the LVC reserves consisting of Carper, Van Tash, Rachel Kelly, and Alex Lehman came up big once again, combining for 31 off the bench.

Lebanon Valley heads into the holiday as winners of two-straight.  The Dutchmen host Pitt-Bradford for the second of a three-game home stand on Wednesday night, Dec. 30.
