NEW YORK CITY – Lebanon Valley used double-digit scoring outputs from six players to defeat Hunter 89-62 in the championship game of the Hawks' 2014 tip-off tournament. The title game victory is LVC's second in as many weeks as the Flying Dutchmen (5-0) won the Gwynedd Mercy tip-off crown last weekend.
For the second-straight weekend,
Bridget Rothert earned tournament MVP honors. The junior netted 11 points and added seven assists, five rebounds, and three steals in the title game one night after scoring a career-high 31 points and setting the program record for most three pointers in a game against Eastern in semifinal action.
Junior
Peyton Carper was named to the all-tournament team after pouring in a game-high 18 points and corralling six boards against Hunter and netting five and pulling in nine rebounds in a win over the Eagles the night before.
The Dutchmen shot 47.1 percent from the floor and nearly 40 percent from beyond the arc on Saturday while turning in their best performance of the year from the charity stripe with a 94.1 percent conversion rate.
Lebanon Valley trailed the Hawks just once on the night at 2-0 in the opening seconds. From there, the Blue and White put together a dominant 18-2 run capped by a pair of Carper free throws at the 15:44 mark of the first half.
The Dutchmen defense was stingy as well, keeping Hunter from reaching double-digits for over 12 minutes. The Hawks also committed ten first half turnovers compared to just three by LVC.
Leading 37-17 with 4:08 remaining in the first half, Lebanon Valley closed out the timeframe with an emphatic 15-3 run during which Rothert, Carper, freshman
Kaitlyn Van Tash, junior
Alyssa Cirucci, and senior
Rachel Kelly all contributed with buckets.
The Dutchmen took their largest lead of the game when a pair of Rothert foul shots put them ahead by 39 three minutes into the second half. The Hawks failed to draw within closer than 26 points the rest of the way.
Sophomore
Lauren Derby scored 12 points while junior
Taylor Umbrell netted 11, grabbed five rebounds, and dished out six assists. Sophomore
Lexie Lantz and Van Tash were the Dutchmen's fifth and sixth players to reach the double-digit scoring mark with ten apiece and Cirucci pulled in a game-high seven boards to go along with her nine points. Kelly and junior
Cara Breslin added four points each.
After playing four of their first five games on the road, the undefeated Dutchmen will continue to play the role of road warriors when they travel to Messiah to take on the rival Falcons in their 2014 Commonwealth Conference opener in their next matchup on Saturday, Nov. 29. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
